I read in the USA Today that Obama's self-proclaimed religion is Christianity within the United Church of Christ. Is this true?

Based on his "temple" at the DNC, and how high he was above the crowd, I thought it was himself.

His interviews on his religion verify your thinking.

There is a very strong emphasis on I, me and my.

Does the president have to be Christian?

We say one has freedom of religion, does that freedom come with prejudice of only being acceptable if it agrees with mine?

I supose a president doesn't have to be a christian, but it helps with my vote. On the other hand if he claims to be a christian, and his life and beliefs show otherwsie(see Ann's post), it hurts him alot.
So no he doesn't have to be a christians, unless he claims to be one. And if he isn't, he has tried to fool people.

Just as Kerry made a campaign issue of his Vietnam service, Obama has cynically tried to make a campaign issue of his so called "Christianity".

Instead, he has revealed himself as a non Christian , just as Kerry was revealed as the traitor he is.

The United Church of Christ, from the website, seems extremely liberal to me. Anyone know about this denomination?

Are you even familiar with liberation theology and how out of touch with Scripture it is?

No only that Obama's pastor gave Louis Farakan a lifetime achievement award......
That in and of itself is strange, also Obama called for the walls between Islam,Christianity and Judaism to be torn down......If he doesn't believe in the exclusivity of Jesus Christ as the only way he cannot be a christian in my opinion... Jesus said he was THE WAY,THE TRUTH,THE LIFE and that no man comes to the father but by him..

Read this interview with BHO and the Chicago Sun-Times regarding his faith and you'll see that he clearly does not understand the Christian faith and espouses theological positions that are in fact contrary to God's Word with respect to salvation and Biblical Christianity.

    http://www.suntimes.com/news/falsani/726619,obamafalsani040504.article

Now, does a person have to be a Christian in order to POTUS? No. Do I have to vote for someone who is not a Christian that is running for the office of POTUS? No.

And this Chicago Sun-Times interview is even more telling:

I Know That the UCofC Does Ordain Homosexuals

I was once a UCofC, and it wasn't until I left the church that I became a genuine born-again believer [at age 20]. The UCofC made me a card carrying member of the church, but, I never once had to profess Jesus as Savior.

On top of their teaching that church membership makes you acceptable in God's eyes, they have also ordained homosexuals, and they don't require them to be celibate.

This makes them more a liberal off-shoot of the main-stream church, and close to being a "cult."

That is all I know. But, I'd have to admit that Obama's now ex-church preaches a confrontational Gospel that I believe would call a race riot an act of God to clean out the Conservatives. This merely opinion, so, forgive me if I step on someone shoes.

George Bush isn't a Christian either. Do you recognize that? The candidate that the far-right evangelicals pushed for two elections turns out to have heretical non-Christian beliefs.
