I had someone tell me in another thread, that they only needed "one verse" to prove their point. Just how many false and heretical doctrines have been started under the "One Verse" fallacy?

Now I will grant you that the Word of God is infallible and that no verse is innacurate, but taking one sentence out of a speach, a chapter, or a book can certainly be dangerous and alter the meaning.

    An obvious one is this:

We certainly know we are not supposed to hate anyone, so this verse can not be considered "alone."

If you have some examples of how one verse could be easily mistaken when taken out of context or know a doctrine that is based upon one verse, please share it with me here.

    Thanks

    ~Lorelei

PS. Please try not get side tracked arguing over whether or not the doctrine of a particular verse is wrong or not. I simply want to know if they are used alone to represent an entire doctrine.

James 2:24 Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only.

    DHK,

Heh, try the whole second chapter, as well as how it works with Paul's words in Romans and elsewhere, and the Catholic doctrine is all there. ;)

    God bless,

1Pet.3:21 The like figure whereunto even baptism doth also now save us (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God,) by the resurrection of Jesus Christ:

    Mark 16:17 And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues;
18 They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.

</font>[/QUOTE]Lorelei, your not taking that verse out of context. We just need to understand what Jesus means when he says "Hate"

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

OH yea here is another one....

    Eph 2:8-9

For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast

    Lorelei,

Here's one that actually CAN stand alone and make a sound doctrine:

1Co 15:33 Be not deceived: evil communications corrupt good manners.

That, and allot of the Proverbs.

Here is one I have encountered that people use to support a false doctrine.

2Co 5:8 We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord.

With that verse BY ITSELF the doctrine of 'you go right to heaven when you die' was formed.

    God Bless

PS, remember everyone, she said don't argue the doctrines in this thread [IMG]

    ONE VERSE WONDER

"that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work."

The heresy of Sola Scriptura relies on this one verse while ignoring others which specifically tell us to use tradition whether oral or written.

Just because scripture helps complete a man of God does mean that we are to ignore tradition (oral or written) and go against the rest of scripture.

DHK: 1 Peter 3:21 is never taken alone! No one says that baptism alone saves but that baptism is necessary to salvation, thus 1 Peter 3:21 is always in combination with Mark 16:16. Did you forget that the Church of Christ teaches that immersion of believers is the only Christian baptism just as you do? We never say that baptism alone saves. Nothing alone saves! In fact, the problem with faith that doesn't have works is that it is alone! Anything alone is dead. One must hear the Gospel (Rom 10:17), have faith in Christ (Heb 11:6), repent (Acts 17:30), confess (Rom 10:10) that Jesus is both Christ and the Son of God and must be baptized for the remission of sins (Acts 2:38), and then be faithful to Christ to be saved (1 Cor 15:2). The Bible teaches all of that, but it is YOU who wish to take one verse, Eph 2:8, and say that one thing alone saves. To the contrary, however, "For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:" (Eph 2:8) explains that these things I listed are necessary "for the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world;" (Titus 2:11-12) Will you deny that the grace of God saves us by teaching us what we must do to be saved and how to live before God? Surely you will not also claim that there are no Scriptures that teach the above, considering that I have given a few?

Catholic: 2 Tim 3:16 and 1 Cor 4:6 go together, with 2 Pet 3:16 and especially MARK SEVEN.

"For in six days the Lord created the Heavens and the Earth".

Another "one liner" that some people don't believe.

When you add all the "one liners" up from scripture that "people don't believe" the list is pretty long.

    In Christ,

I think I was a little unclear, though I see DHK got my point.

I didn't mean just taking any one verse by itself. For instance the one that 3 Angels Mom used

She even noted that there were a lot of Proverbs that said the same thing. That would NOT be a One Verse Wonder because there are many verses that say the same thing.

Oneness used the same thinking. I could find many other verses to prove that salvation is through believing alone by faith. Those are not One Verse Wonders.

    This one is.

Some people baptize for the dead because of this one verse, even though it never actually says we should do so.

    Lorelei:
The Psalmist said the SUM of thy words sre truth.
Psalms 119:160. Your post makes a good point.
When one uses one verse at the exclusion of related passages to the topic he may misinterpret the teaching of the Word. For example, I can use one scripture that teaches belief saves. John 8:24. However, I can also provide the same evidence from the same Holy Spirit from the same New Testament that all on this board have to support confession saves. Romans 10:10. The same could be said for the blood of Christ. Rev. 1:5. The same for repentance. Luke 13:3. I could also do the same for baptism. I Pet. 3:21.
However, since the sum of God's word are truth, it logically and rationally applies that all of the above are essential for salvation. If not, why not?

Luke 1:42 And she spake out with a loud voice, and said, Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb.
43 And whence is this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?
