I am definitely no fan of Oprah's. Matter of fact I think she is very dangerous in the way she has almost a religious type of authority and following with so many. However IMO, this really can't be blamed on her, and I hope it doesn't discourage people from getting involved with charity endeavors for fear of having their names associated with scandal out of their control.

No matter what Oprah does, her legions of couch whales will never stop worshipping and adoring her.

I heard that Oprah wouldn't let a white girl into her school because she was white. That is no surprise to me.

The only thing I can say about the school being cut off from the outside: they were isolationists on lock-down because South Africa is the world's leader in violent crime. So if I were going to set up a school there, it would be secure.

I'd have to say no precisely because of what happened here.

Then how could she take credit for it? Honestly i think this school is nothing more than a promo stunt for her, but i also don't think she is to blame for what happened.
I'm just amazed that she gets so much attention for this when there are kids in her own city (Chicago) who are in the same condition and in some cases worst than those kids in SA.

I'm sorry you-all have such a poor opinion of Oprah. I like her very much. I don't agree with everything she says or does, but for the most part, I think she's a valuable person to society.

I don't know if calling people who watch her program "couch-whales" is very beneficial to a discussion.

I also would have to see a link to some information about her not letting a white girl in because of her skin color before I could comment on that.

And she was asked why didn't she start a school for the underprivileged black students of Chicago. She said that she looked at doing that, but that in her opinion these students didn't want to be educated and wouldn't appreciate it.

In my gut, I don't feel that she started this Leadership Academy in South Africa for her own gain. I do feel that these girls deserve an opportunity to get out of the repressive and oppressive culture that they are in and if Oprah has the money to do it - then so be it.

As far as the abuse allegations are concerned, the buck stops with her. She should have had someone there - on site - that she could be in contact with at anytime day or night to check on all kinds of things.

She'll take the blame for this, but I'll guarantee, things will change and that she will be more of a hands-on figure head from now on.

Brother Curtis, serious question: why do you think she built that school for her own glory ?

Maybe she wanted to, who knows. But when you're somebody like Oprah, somebody else decides for you. Like your agent, or your PR manager.

I don't watch Oprah all that much. For that matter, I don't watch the Gaither gospel hour all that much either, or Pat Robertson, or Hollywood heat.

I think that's why she does everything. Every act of charity she has ever done has been in front of a camera.

Oprah has been a victim of abuse so she knows how sneaky the child abusers can be. I can't see her knowing the parents visits were limited. Maybe this news article contains partly false information, which is usually the case.
I don't care for her as a person, but I believe she cares deeply for those kids. I bet she is thinking "I should have known better" due to her background.

I liked her until I saw her interview with the author of A million little pieces. He told his biography as best he could, and it was 99% accurate. Good for him, but there were a few falsehoods which are minute. The length of his jail stay, etc.. It could be attributed to a lack of memory or trying to disguise one event as to not identify who was involved ( such as the manner in which a suicide ocured while he was in jail).

Anyway, she humiliated this poor guy on national tv talking junk about him and then had the nerve to call him back on her show to do it again. Saw both interviews, the second one was really awful. I was so glad to hear a few rock stars like Steven Tyler (Aerosmith) stood up for him. Nevertheless, my tv antenna went down that week, never to return. Not just because of this of course. I have never seen such meanness as I saw on her show that day. Her pride was hurt, so she was going to blame someone else for it.

I agree Curtis. It seems most of everything she does is in front of the camera, and for her own glory so I feel this is no different. She has donated millions to charity so who knows.

That just tells you what she does in front of the television. How could you possibly know what she does or doesn't do privately? That would be like someone coming on here and stating factually, that the only place that Brother Curtis proclaims Christ is on the Baptist Board, because their only exposure of you is through this site and don't know anything about your private life. It would be absurd. I never thought I would ever be defending Oprah, because I really, really can't stand her. But you have to be fair and reasonable in your criticism.

Do you spend you days fixing television sets or watching them? And, do you always watch Oprah?

I watch enough to know every disaster, there's Oprah, microphone in hand and makeup piled deep on her face. She does charity for her sake, not for charity's sake. That's what I believe.

And I don't spend a lot of time wondering what people say about me, if they think I only proclaim Christ here, so be it.

But Oprah seems to spend a lot of time shaping what people think of her.

She was at least trying, in my opinion, only, of course.

I am in agreement that I also personally don't care for Oprah (although I don't hold someone looks or use of makeup against them). I just don't see how we can judge the motives of her heart. I don't know her reasons for her charity work My big problem with her is I think she is dangerous in that she seems to really push her own brand of righteousness and spirituality, and is quite influential in doing so.

You missed my point completely. I was not saying that you did that, or that you should care what others thought. I apologize if you took it that way. My only point was in trying to show, just as others could have no idea what you might do in your life, you also couldn't possibly know how much charity she is involved in that wasn't seen on television.

I don't like the way she has been turned into a religeous icon, or her promoting her false religeous views, but she doesn't personally run that school, she doesn't live there to run it, others are in charge, how could she know whats going on there, and at the very least she shares her money, I've seen her many times. Not everyone rich shares.

And that is precisely my concern also. Millions of women, watch her parade all manner of evil "religions" and concepts, and many are deceived.
