In a column that ran in the Sun-Times on Monday, Novak suggested he learned Plame's identity partly from reading Who's Who in America. A CNN source said a producer had placed a copy of Who's Who on the set Thursday prior to the taping, apparently so it could be consulted while Novak was asked about the issue....

Wilson's entry carries over about 5 lines to the next column, which is why it cuts off in mid-sentence at the end. The relevant text is "m. Valerie Elise Plame, Apr. 3, 1998," which not only appears in the 2003 edition, but ALL editions from 1999-2005!

Ok, but under Valerie Plame's name does it mention she worked for the CIA as an agent? Her marriage wasn't a secret, her job was.

Well, ya gotta admit, even though it's conjecture, it sure do add a twist.

BOB NOVAK, My Leak Case Testimony: 'I learned Valerie Plame's name from Joe Wilson's entry in 'Who's Who in America'... MORE Published reports that I took the Fifth Amendment, made a plea bargain with the prosecutors or was a prosecutorial target were all untrue... MORE... My primary source has not come forward to identify himself... Bill Harlow, the CIA public information officer who was my CIA source for the column confirming Mrs. Wilson's identity. I learned Valerie Plame's name from Joe Wilson's entry in 'Who's Who in America'... I answered questions using the names of Rove, Harlow and my primary source.

It's a little more than that when someone has said Wilson's wife recommended him for the trip to Niger.

Then Novak can find out her name on his own from Wilson's entry.

Put 2 and 2 together, which Novak did, and no one else had to out her as an employee of the CIA. It wasn't as if she was known as Valerie Wilson at the CIA.

You'd think Novak could have come up with a more plausible story, given the length of time it took tp invent it. And if he came up with it earlier, he sure would have saved the WH a lot of grief.

Or perhaps he played the leftist media like a Stradivarious. Right in time for it to be fresh in people's minds, come November.....

Yeah, he wanted us all to think he outed a CIA agent at the behest of the Bush White House.

It's very clear why he would want to appear to be disloyal to America and a tool of Karl Rove.

Isn't that what every political columnist wants?

Nonsense. It's one thing to be an employee of the CIA and another to be an agent.

    Rove did it. (linkie)

Blinded by your ideology once again.

Novak never said she was an "agent". The word he used in his article was "operative". He evidently made the change himself after being told she was an "employee".

He wasn't given her actual name by anyone but Joe Wilson.

    http://www.cnn.com/2003/ALLPOLITICS/09/29/novak.cia/

Novak said Monday that he was working on the column when a senior administration official told him the CIA asked Wilson to go to Niger in early 2002 at the suggestion of his wife, whom the source described as "a CIA employee working on weapons of mass destruction."

So the argument is that Novak is guilty of nothing more than taking a long time to present a somewhat-possible alibi?

    No, clear-eyed as ever.

    Oh, he said operative. So?

He also said he was told by "... this official, who is no partisan gunslinger". How is Rove anything but a partisan gunslinger?

Their marriage wasn't a secret, so saying Joe Wilson's wife instead of Valerie Plame is merely outting in synonyms.

Are you trying to pretend that the Wilsons are to blame because they did not keep their marriage a secret so that when Mrs. Wilson was outted by Rove it was easy for Novak to look up her name? Or do you actually believe that hogswallop?

Hey, that's the exact same news story I linked to just before. Do you think it has more weight because you linked to it now?

What was the point of the revelation? Surely you don't think it was mere gossip...Why did Novak print it after Harlow asked him not to?

Was is really unbelievable is trying to put the blame on the Wilsons.

No, not even - he made that excuse back in October 2003 (linkie - last line, second paragraph of pg2).
It's just that some people evidently feel a distraction from the Rove revelation is needed now. They're just grasping at old, rotten straws.

Novak may be guilty of a great many things. I wouldn't know. But...

He is certainly guilty of getting getting Plame's name from her husband, Joe Wilson, and publishing it.

Joe Wilson released her CIA name instead of her married name. By doing so , it is a tacit admission that she was not a covert agent.

No one has been indicted for releasing the name of a covert CIA agent. No one will be. The reason is simple. It never happened.

If it did, the proven liar, Joe Wilson should be the one that is tagged.

She wasn't an agent and her job wasn't secret. Simply working for the CIA doesn't make one's job "secret".

If she wasn't an agent, why did the CIA tell investigators that she was? And why did the White House commit a crime trying to cover up a non-crime?

The excuses being peddled now, are aimed only at the gullible who want to believe.

The "White House" is incapable of committing a crime.

Only one person that actually works in what could be considered the "White House" has been accused of committing a crime.

You're overstating your case, such as it is.
