    Barbarian observes:
We probably shouldn't be mythologizing the Pilgrims, either to present them as pure and perfect people, or as wholly greedy and dishonest. A proper treatment would be to present them honestly, with their virtues and faults. Likewise with the Indians.[/QUO

Hmm... not in my daughter's textbook. Too bad about the schools where you live.

Washington was a Mason, at a time when that meant something. And Jefferson was not a Christian of the sort we'd call Christian.

I believe they pressed them under large rocks until their skeletons gave way, or hung them. And not all that often. A few years of hysteria, for which most of the Pilgrims expressed repentence later. They did sometimes steal from the Indians, and they did sometimes kill for no good cause. But on the whole, they weren't much different than we are, and that is what students should know.

He did call for enslavement of the Indians, and on his advice, most of the Indians of the Carribean were wiped out a generation or two later.

He wasn't significantly different than other explorers. Again, no plaster saint, but no devil, either.

Sadly I must assume that Ps104_33 is getting their wish even though they have not responded to the historical points that have been raised in this thread. Rules are rules, I understand and respect that, but I would love to see Ps104_33 answer the historical points raised by myself and others.
