Time to take a break from the Internet message boards. Anyone else taking such a sabbatical for Lent?

Don't know what a sabbatical is nor do I sacrifice anything for Lent, but I've considered taking a permanent break from message boards.

Now wouldn't that siimplify one's life though !!

I don't 'do' lent. Never even heard of it until we lived in a very Catholic town.

Why are people bragging about not fasting or sacrificing for the Lord?

Maybe because no one wants to be confused with being Catholic? Dunno. Hey, if a Catholic does something I do, I'm not going to change what I do. That's plain silly.

</font>[/QUOTE]I think his question was "Why are people bragging about not fasting?" rather than "Why aren't people bragging about fasting?". If it was the second, then that Scripture reference would indeed be an appropriate answer. [IMG] Remember, Johnv said he'll be observing Lent in a "private" unspecified manner which is in keeping with that Scripture passage.

I knew what his question was. I turned it around. I don't fast for lent. I've given up t.v. for a church wide period of prayer and fasting but didn't advertise it.

Fasting just because it's 'that time of the year' isn't scriptural.

The post was aimed at me for saying I don't fast.

Giving up message boards? Why not just give up reading the bible? [IMG]
    Gina

Disclaimer: The above post was not in any way meant to discredit those who recognize lent. In no way was it meant to suggest one should give up reading their bibles.
Fake sarcasm was used throughout the words, any resemblance to real sarcasm was purely coincidental. No animals were harmed in the making of this comment.

    Thanks for the humor, Gina.
But on the serious side, we must admit that there is a certain addiction to message boards. I kicked this one for a couple of weeks until for whatever reason I cam back. It is the topic of much discontent in my house and I'm the abuser. Consider the things that don't get done because of it, the interruption during company, mealtime, departure, etc. It's the first thing in the morning and the last thing at night.

Can't think that it's a substitute for bible study...although it is of much information to me. In truth, it has made me realize that there is much discontent and friction between people over religious issues. My disapproval of the church of my upbringing was a big issue on another board. This one (as well as the other one) is mainly involved in the Cath/Prot dispute and it will continue until the end of time. It reminds me of the Israeli / Palastine conflict.

But, I can live without this. Nothing gets settled anyhow. It reminds me of the church bible study I was in for 25 years. Everyone had different ideas there too and it distressed me that there were no pat answers. There are none here either. There will be none to come. The stress involved is not from God. There might be more gain from sitting on the deck petting the dog. I get much more of a blessing by witnessing to someone about the need to "believe in Jesus Christ" than to be on here arguing about the meaning of the word "belive"....or the meaning of the preposition "in".

Give up for lent? How about give up for Ever?
    There; how's that for negativism?

That was probably one of the most funny of posts I've read in awhile! Kudos to you for a great sense of humor! [IMG] )

    Also to Harley4Him-

If people mention what they are or not going to do for Lent, whether they observe it or not, I don't think it's a form of bragging considering that most people here have corresponded with each other long enough to almost feel like they "know" the other person as a "friend". People like to share what they are doing as a way of strenghthening and building up of their faith.

Diane? Was it you who posted the Scripture on fasting in secret and not making a display of it? HOW TRUE! But I don't think it was this kind of "bragging". That is, I don't think anyone was trying to brag over their upcoming "sacrifices". So, I hope you don't take any offense.

Lent is a season prior to Easter that is celebrated by Catholics which reminds us both of our own mortality and of the 40 days Jesus wandered in the desert alone and was tempted by the devil. Lent keeps us focused on our weaknesses and reminds us to stand up to the devil as Jesus did.

That being said, I'm giving up the internet except for weekends so I don't lose touch altogether with anyone. I hope no one is offended by this or take me to be bragging since I'll be doing many other things that I'm not sharing here, so nanny nanny foo-foo! - Just kidding on that last silly statement. - God bless all! You guys are such a joy and I'm really glad I discovered this forum! Thanks for having me! - Meercat

Hi. :) Since I'm not Catholic, I think I will give up cooked spinach, cooked collard greens, cooked turnips, boiled okra, liver, thousand island dressing, white bread, untoasted bagels, cod liver oil, and . . . can I give up my own cooking for -- what is it -- 40 days? :-D

For those of you who really do Lent, what if you momentarily forget and do whatever it is you gave up? Do you have to start over?

    Abiyah, no.

I've been considering giving something up for lent, but instead I decided to give something. Won't go into more details, but there is nothing wrong with lent, or the liturgical year. If you don't want to participate, oh well. Your lose [IMG] ;)
