New York City is installing Palm scanners for various city departments. Instead of puching in, you will put your hand on the machine to "Clock-in and clock-out"

City officials defend the machine by stating the system automates payroll tasks ie no need for time-consuming review of paper time sheets.

But some see the devices as a privacy intrusion.

Hmm, how could you leave early :tonofbricks: and have a friend clock out for you - unless you leave your hand with him:smilewinkgrin:

Good, bad, or indifferent? Your thoughts

It sounds no different than my company. Our badges are read when we enter and leave. Badge or handprint, what's the difference?

We are going to face a flood of this stuff soon.

OR wants to equip every car/truck with gps and track all of them and total miles driven and we will pay tax based on mileage - isn't that a good reason to get an economy car - we will pay the same as a gas hog - that is why they are doing it :tear:

There is also talk of chips on windshields to track your use of toll roads/bridges and/or bill you for driving a freeway during rush hour.

Our local Kroger's has fingerprint operated time clocks. One of the butcher's in the meat department told us the other day he puts his finger on a reader and clocks in.

I guess one difference is that with the handprint, the company holds biometric information about you in their databases in addition to the normal information they have like SSN, address, phone numbers, etc. The risk to you if their databases are compromised is greater.
