I am totally opposed to opening an unnecessary can of worms. The question is this: Is asking a man about his whole life unnecessary? I think it is very necessary because being a pastor is not what you do in the office and in the pulpit. It is your whole life, including what you entertain yourself with and what you do in your spare time.

A church who doesn't ask these question is, IMO, not taking seriously the commands of Scripture about qualifications for pastor. They are looking for a CEO who does right things in the office, the church structure or ministry, and the pulpit.

A church who asks these questions recognizes that a man's whole life is vital.

If you ask any man certain questions you will get the same answers every time. If you ask a man about the disciples he has made you will probably find some who have not discipled anyone. Would anyone want someone leading a church who has never led at least one person?

When the committee starts to have personal interviews I think that opening the interview with the candidate giving an in depth testimony of his life experiences before and after his salvation experience and how he accepted his calling and including how he approaches what he considers his ministry strengths and weaknesses.

This may answers many questions that the committee may have and allow them to ask him to elaborate a little more in some areas without opening that can of worms.
