So having a church that chooses doesn't have a patriotic service is now liberal? I think we use the term "liberal" incorrectly way too often. I'm under no biblical obligation to be patriotic. Am I patriotic? Yes I am. Do I want to worship God? Yes I do. There's a time and place to be patriotic. But the Bible never teaches that one has to be patriotic.

I a huge UNC Tarheel fan. I watch all their basketball games. You can ask anybody that knows me and they will tell you I'm a UNC fan. Now, when UNC won the title in 2009, I would have rejected any worship service that was devoted to that. Not wanting to have a service don't make me non patriotic any more than not wanting to have a UNC service.

Yes, we should thank them. Very much so. I have family that is right now as we speak over seas. I live in a community that has a military base. I know many many people that are in the military and I'm very grateful for them.

But this in no way means I should substitute a worship service to God to have a patriotic service. Now, some have said they have a patriotic themed service that is to God and thanking him for our country, our freedom to worship, and helping brave soldiers that fought for us. There's nothing at all wrong with that any more than having a service with a love theme in February or a mom theme in May or a Dad theme in June. As long as our worship is toward God, that is what is important.

The secular patriotic songs that for some reason are in some hymnbooks are not worship to God. Are they bad songs? No, not at all. Neither is Jingle Bells, walking in a winter wonderland and other secular Christmas songs. There are good songs that shouldn't be part of a worship service.

Not having a patriotic worship service doesn't make one a liberal. Having liberal theology makes one a liberal.

Actually, you are wrong. We are told to gather together. What are you doing on Sunday Evening service? Gathering together. Same thing for Wednesday service. Choirs? like the singing of songs of worship by people? Yep, that's in the Bible.
Doesn't say you have to have that. In fact, the early church many times met in homes. The Bible says to meet together, it doesn't specify which location.

Giving glory to God for the freedom of our Country is one thing. Having a praise service to our country is another. We are told how to worship in the Bible.

Agreed, so let me be specific since you are parsing words. A church with liberal theology would probably not have a patriotic service. If you know of one, please put the link.

Nobody said you should. I haven't seen any post here from anyone who is for patriotic services use the word "substitute" so isn't this muddying the waters of the debate? What is it? Now it seems the definition of the OP is changing. Is this bait and switch? Or more circular reasoning?

It's really weird seeing a moderator mock someone so blatantly. He has some good points.

Should we as Christians really be thanking God as part of a church service for a nation which as allowed the murder of 50 million people in the last 40 years?

When we sing of a beautiful country that stretches from sea to shining sea do we consider the vast numbers of native peoples killed to make that expansion possible? Can we really thank God for that?

    Excellent points C4K.
That is another reason why it is best to leave patriotism out of worship. Focus on bringing glory to God, not a nation.

Okay, excellent points, now perhaps we can have a serious discussion based on more historical reality instead of personal preferences. Good post.

So it is ok to discuss this in terms of historical reality, but not based on Scripture?
Also, you seem to have bypassed the link I posted of an extremely liberal church having a patriotic service, and there are many other examples.

There is a simple question here.

Is it right for Christians to have a church service dedicated to thanking God for a country which permits the murder of its most vulnerable babies?

How about a Thanksgiving Service? Is that proper? Why wouldn't that be equivalent?

Thanksgiving services I have been to thank God for His blessing and provision through the year, not for a country that allows babies to be slaughtered.

Giving a whole service to thank God for a infanticidal nation? How can that be justified?

Hitler's policies resulted in the death of six million people and we condemn him. US polices have allowed the death of 50 million and we go to church to honour it?

    Thanks, Queasy for the link.

Ok, Roger, OTOH, the US has freed untold numbers from concentration camps. The USA has fed and clothed and medicated the world. The USA is among the first to provide humanitarian aid anywhere in the world when help is needed. Also, the USA along with the Brits throughout history have probably provided the largest evangelistic means of spreading the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Can we consider that in our focus?

Does that really cancel out 50 million of America's children being legally executed for the convenience of their mothers?

Hey, you're preaching to the choir here. No, that doesn't cancel that out. But are we as a nation responsible for the wickedness of our leaders?

Hey, he's got good points, none of which give any tone of liberalism. Maybe it's time to sit a few plays out.

That is the topic of another discussion. My point is that I have a problem with using a worship service to honour any nation, much less one that that allows this kind of evil.

If we were to have a service focused on our nation, wherever it is, maybe it ought to be focused on praying for our leaders and begging God to give us mercy despite our wickedness instead of honouring her while ignoring her evils.
