I gently suggest you never run for political office.

Which was the whole purpose for the line of questioning no doubt...

To get the mean old Reuplican on record as an extremist pro-lifer that won't even support abortion in the case of rape.

I wish that Republicans would get smarter when answering these questions and recognize the real purposes for which they are asked.

His exact words were "the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down".

Exactly HOW does the female body shut that whole thing down? If it's "really" rape, then the female body automatically prevents pregnancy? What?????

And I am 100% against abortion BTW. But this guys statements are just stupid.

Every Republican who runs for office should know that a question about abortion is standard. Atkin seemed caught off guard. He should have been better prepared.

Here it is in a nutshell for those who do not get it.

He said that doctors have explained it to him that a woman's body will not allow for a rapist's seed to impregnant her. "A woman's body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down".

If you have two women, both ovulating, and one is raped and one has consensual sex with her husband, BOTH stand the exact same chance of getting pregnant.

If statistics show that pregnancy due to a rape is low, then it's only because 25 of 28 days of her cycle, she is not ovulating. But if she IS ovulating, then the raped woman has the same odds of getting pregnant as any woman ovulating.

The man doesn't understand simple biology.

Now - I do not care what his stance on abortion is. It's irrelevant to me. But just for the sake of argument, I hold to the same stance he does. I, personally, - the Christian in me and the feminist in me - doesn't like abortion even in the cases of rape and incest. Only if the victim were a child - 7,8, or 9 years old - would I not hesitate to seriously ponder terminating a pregnancy of.

So, the purpose of this thread was not to attack his personal beliefs as some seem to believe.

It was to express my frustration at people in leaderahip who don't understand simple facts learned in elementary school.

    • Hank Johnson (D) doesn't understand simple earth science. He declared that the island of Guam was going to tip over if any more people populated it!!
    • I can't remember which local politician who said this, but a town council woman was going on a tirade once about how Arizona should not get to uptight about illegal immigrants because "Arizona doesn't even border Mexico anyway!" No clue of 3rd grade geography.
    • Joe Biden - enough said
    • Nancy "We've got to pass it to see what's in it" Pelosi - enough said.
I'm not talking about a gaffe or misspeak. I'm talking about a person - responsible for running the country - opening his or her mouth and showing the world what they truly believe, perceive, and hold as truth.

It doesn't matter is Akin was trying to defend his belief of no abortions for any reason.

He defended it badly and revealed a level of ignorance not seem in some time.

Howdy Sister Scarlett I listen to http://janetmefferd.com/ She talked about that very issue. Have you listen to her before? She is a Conservative Christian that talks about the issues for today in politics and the church.

Thanks for the link. I think everyone should read it. Especially those who want to write in "Jesus" on the ballot and don't care if Obama goes back in.

I don't know to what he was referring. You'd have to ask him. I'm sure he heard something explained that he misunderstood. It happens all the time. People spout foolishness all the time. It's only Democrats that get a free pass. The fact of the matter is that anything concerning women is politically charged. That's my point, and Scarlett delivered a shimmering example thereof in her false witness about the "facts" he was citing and what he believed.

I'll agree they're illadvised, but he is to be preferred to any Democrat in the Senate. I'm more astounded that he walked into the trap standing straight up.

Anyone as stupid as this fellow does is not smart enough to be a good Senator! Anyone who has taken a biology course knows better than what he said. Anyone with a brain knows that this was an utterly stupid statement.

I am not astounded at all. The ultra-conservatives in the Republican party do not like women. They are waging a war on women and you are contributing to that war against women by defending this foolish man.

I've heard of way the female body can be used to shut down rape:

<inappropriate link removed - LE - comment: I've heard of it, too, but the link to it is inappropriate for this family board, sorry.....>

Lady, not when you look at this fellow and others of his ilk.

Not when you see the laws that folk like him have tried to pass in many states and have passed in some.

It is obvious that many of the men want to take the country back to who knows when ... it is obvious that many of these men want to put women back in their place, wherever they believe that place is located. I do not see why any women would vote for many of these men with such attitudes.

What Scarlett O. said. Likewise, as it happens, I share Akin-braincells' views on abortion (probably about the only thing I have in common with him) but the anti-abortion cause does itself no favours whatsoever by - it seems - increasingly having spokespersons like him; the likes of him threaten to drag the Republican Party into the 14th century...

    God calls it whoredom.

    Can be said about anyone.

The "silly women" of whom Paul speaks being "led captive." Are they being raped?

This is all rather horribly misogynistic.

Thank you for that, Matt. You've proven my point. That's the politics of women.

No, it's about treating your fellow human beings with respect. Sorry that you can't see that.

He is just carrying the Democrat water. What ever the latest talking point that MSNBC pushed he repeats here on the board.

Are you saying that even though it was rape it is still the woman's fault. In this case the teenage girl?
