I do not understand why, when J.B. Phillips is quoted, it is not from the 1972 Revised Edition.
For instance, Michael D. Marlowe quotes from the 1947 edition. BibleGateway quotes from the 1957 or 1960 versions.

Why not quote from the latest one that J.B. Phillips was responsible for?

As I said, I am not sure which earlier edition that BibleGateway uses. But I will supply snips from the one it uses and the 1972 edition. I will not be comprehensive. I will skip a number of items. But you will get the idea. I am partial to the 1972 edition.

I will list these snips with the designations of "old" and "72" respectively.

    1 Cor.
    6:15
Old : Have you realized the almost incredible fact
72 : Have you not realized

    14:7
Old : if their notes all sound alike
72 : unless their notes have the proper intervals

    2 Cor.
    1:5
    Old : Christ's suffering
    72: Christ's immeasurable suffering

    1:9
Old : we had this experience of coming to the end of our tether
72 : we had this sense of impending disaster

    1:14
Old : we believe you have already understood the purpose of our lives
72 : I believe that you have partially understood me

    1:23
    Old : [blank]
72 : I would stake my life on it

    1:24
Old : I am not responsible for your faith
72 : we are not trying to dominate you and your faith

    2:16
Old : Who could think himself adequate for a responsibility like this?
72 : Who is fit for such a task?

    To be continued later on.

    Continuing in 1 Corinthians.

    1:17
Old : that large class which trafficks in the Word of God
72 : that large number who corrupt the Word of God

    3:1
Old : Is this going to be more self-advertisement in your eyes?
72 : Does this mean yet another production of credentials?

    3:3
Old : in living men and women
    72 : or human hearts

    3:11
Old : is such a very much more glorious thing than the old
72 : is so much more glorious than the old and transient

    4:1
Old : ministry of the new agreement
    72 : ministry

    4:2
Old : we use no hocus-pocus, no clever tricks
72 : we have set our faces against all shameful secret practices

    4:8
Old : we are handicapped on all sides
72 : we are hard-pressed on all sides

    4:16
    Old : we never collapse
72 : we never lose heart

While the 1972 revision might come closer to reflecting the actual New Testament text, it is still just a paraphrase, and should be viewed as commentary.

Perhaps both versions (1960 and 1972) were copyrighted in 1972, producing the confusion?

I haven't checked them all, but it appears the "old" renderings are from the 1961 revision. (The earlier completion NT, IIRC, was simply a compilation of all the individual books he had previously translated.) The version on the internet (1961 revision) was sanctioned by Phillips' estate. I do not know why the family released that version and not the 1972 version, if that is the case.

My understanding is that the 1972 revision was, more or less, a retranslation based on the 1966 UBS Greek and that he purposely cleaned up some paraphrases from the earlier editions because he had learned that his version was being used as a primary text and wanted to produce something less free-wheeling than the original. Why the 1972 isn't readily available online I can't say.

BTW: Does anyone know what's become of Marlowe? He hasn't updated his site in years. (Since June 2012, in fact.)
