People accessing the Internet through a high-speed connection accounted for more than half of all time spent online in January, Nielsen/NetRatings said in a report released yesterday.

It’s the first time broadband access bypassed dial-up Internet access.

The Internet research and measurement firm said high-speed Web surfers logged 1.19 billion hours — or 51 percent of the total 2.3 billion hours spent online during the month.

Total time spent online by high-speed Web surfers rose 64 percent from a year-earlier while time spent online by dial-up surfers fell 3 percent from 1.18 billion hours to 1.14 billion.

It said my speed was poor, which I knew it would. We can't get DSL here, which I totally don't understand, because we get DIRECTV? But I live in Tiny Town, OK., an hour and a half from OKC, most of the time I feel lucky to have electricity and a telephone line. ;)

So far, 53% of those who voted have broadband connection and 74% spend more than 8 hours/week online.

The "time on line" statistic could be deceptive. I spend a lot of time working (writing) at my PC, which is always connected to the Internet. I may not be actively surfing during that time, but I am online and I will periodically look something up, read a news story, or tune in to an Internet radio station.

OK, for those of us who aren't too 'puter literate, do you mean that you are connected 24/7? If so how?

If I'm typing a response or posting a new thread, it takes me a while, as I'm a "two finger wonder"! Many's the time I've been disconnected because of no "INTERNET" activity, & when I go to post, I have to get re-connected!

I clicked on the link for bandwidthplace.com and tested my connection speed... the results showed 657.3 kbs. It might probably test slower during peak usage times in the evenings or weekends as compared with a test time of approx 1:45 p.m. on a Tuesday afternoon.

I use DirecPC due to living in the country and can't get DSL out here. I'm pretty satisfied with the DirecPC all in all, but it drops out during heavy rains. If there's lightening associated with the rain then I shut down my system anyway.
