Marriage is patterned after Jesus and the church.

Jesus is coming back for his Bride - not Brides.

I hate to use negative examples. But every example of polygamy in the Bible results in strife, familial dysfunction and problems with covenantal relationships with God. So how can we ever consider God as endorsing polygamy. It isn't his standard. It is man's accommodation for his own lust and greed.

Even Abraham's quasi-polygamous relationship with Hagar created problems. We forget that his relationship with her was an attempt to short-cut God's plan. Look at the pain that short-cut has caused.

Jacob's relationship with his two wives and two concubines created one of the most dysfunctional families ever. Just because most of Genesis is about him and this dysfunctional family doesn't mean that four wives and favoritism among sons is what God wants us to do.

Hannah was caused much distress by jealousy with her husband's other wife.

David's polygamy costs him at least 4 sons and eventually the division of his kingdom.

Solomon's polygamy resulted in the spiritual adultery of the nations of Israel and Judah and God's judgement upon them.

The fact that God used these men and their relationships in spite of their sin doesn't mean that he condoned their action.

God's standard is marital and spiritual purity between one man and one woman, just as it is between one God and His people.

Ah, but baptism and communion ARE ordinances. Marriage is not. That is how it has historically been viewed among baptists, anyway. O I am open to scriptural proof of this still.

And rbell, it is the regulative principle OF WORSHIP. Marriage is not an ordinance, or at least that is my contention so far.

Now c'mon, in the first page nearly everyone's view was "let it be." Why did you all change paths since then?

And it was Iamblessed 16 who came up with what to me is the most persuasive argument in favor of exclusive monogamy. I'll try to give my reasons why in the final analysis it is not washing with me a bit later. Need to congeal my thoughts a bit.

    To MNJacobs, who said
"David's polygamy costs him at least 4 sons and eventually the division of his kingdom." You sure it wasn't dDavid's adultery and murder?
    and
"Solomon's polygamy resulted in the spiritual adultery of the nations of Israel and Judah and God's judgement upon them." Are you sure it wasn't Solomon's marriage to idolatrous women and adopting their ways?

Romans 7:1-3 Know ye not, brethren, (for I speak to them that know the law,) how that the law hath dominion over a man as long as he liveth? For the woman which hath an husband is bound by the law to her husband so long as he liveth; but if the husband be dead, she is loosed from the law of her husband. So then if, while her husband liveth, she be married to another man, she shall be called an adulteress: but if her husband be dead, she is free from that law; so that she is no adulteress, though she be married to another man.

    Polygamy is adultery.

Polygamy in this case means a man being married to more than one woman. This passage condemns a woman being married to more than one man.

amity; do you honestly believe this scripture don't apply to a sister also?

Romans 7:1-3 Know ye not, brethren, (for I speak to them that know the law,) how that the law hath dominion over a man as long as he liveth? For the woman which hath an husband is bound by the law to her husband so long as he liveth; but if the husband be dead, she is loosed from the law of her husband. No, I don't believe it applies to men. If it did, the Bible would have expressed it that way, without being specific about "a woman."

The Old Testament is replete with polygamous men, and no condemnation. In fact somewhere God told David, in holding him to account for his real adulty, "Would I not have given you many wives?" That is a paraphrase, BTW. Don't have time to search for the scripture again. I posted it recently on another thread having to do with polygamy.

We also know polygamy existed in the early church; else why would the passages insisting that a minister and deacon be "the husband of one wife" exist?

Matthew 19:5-6 And said, For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh?
6 Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.
--Note that Jesus said wife and not "wives."
What God joined together was Adam and Eve, not Adam and Eves (plural).

Luke 16:18 Whosoever putteth away his wife, and marrieth another, committeth adultery: and whosoever marrieth her that is put away from her husband committeth adultery.
--Polygamy is adultery because Jesus said it was so. The man is still married to his first wife even though he says that he has put her away. Jesus did not recognize divorce. Thus if he remarried he was married to two wives and was committing adultery and/or polygamy--a state of continuous adultery. The teaching is quite clear.

    I see. I don't necessarily agree, but I see.

So what about God saying to David "I woud have given thee many wives"?
