Well, it seems that 2009 will be the year of Canada's "FLDS Texas Ranch" showdown.

Police arrived in Bountiful, BC yesterday and arrested 2 polygamous leaders of the Mormon sect. It is believed to be the first time since the 1800's that anyone has been charged. The 2 leaders were released with conditions and will appear in court January 21, 2009.

I'm glad someone somewhere has done something, since it is illegal.

I have no issues with polygamy, per se. It is the use of underage girls as wives, and the forced marriage issue that is the problem.

I wouldn't get too excited about this case. They figure it will be at least 5 years through the courts and end up in the Supreme Court of Canada on a civil rights issue.

    Cheers,

    Jim

Not really a laughting matter, Rev Mitchell. Do you know there are a number of Christian (not Mormon) sites that support polygamy?

I'd really like Magnetic Poles to explain why he's okay with polygamy.

Well Maggy, What would you do if your daughter were to want to "marry" a man who has 6 women?

While I don't agree with polygamy, I think it is hypocrtical to condemn those who accept it as cultural or religiously allowed, but accept the serial polygamy of marriage and divorce, and marriage and divorce, and marriage and divorce which seems a cycle of marrigage approved and sometimes even sanctioned by the Christian community as 'moral'. Many eastern cultures accept polygamy... but the husband of many is expected to provide for all his wives and his children and keep them all satisfied..... but the first one especially: I doubt many men would really care to tempt those odds.... or that responsibility.

And, as Rev wisely states....... who would want that many in-laws?

One of the blokes arrested in BC has fathered 144 children and his youngest wife was 15.

Polygamy is illegal in Canada. Whether one agrees with it or not in relation to some cults and Eastern or African religions.

As I said before somewhere, this matter of religious freedom is overplayed in legal terms.

    Cheers,

    Jim

Marrying and divorcing are not good, but it is nowhere the same as polygamy, which is being married at the same time to more than one woman. You may see both as immoral, but they are not the same.

"Serial polygamy" is an oxymoron because the meaning of polygamy is being married simultaneously to more than one wife.

Mitch is right about all those mothers-in-law!
While I don't think it would be a good idea for me, I don't find anything that makes it evil if the parties involved are all consenting adults and have the issues worked out. It is hard for 2 people to make a relationship work...multiply that by new spouses and you end up with a recipe for discord. But if people want to practice polygyny or polyandry, 'taint none of my business. It doesn't bother me one way or the other.

Polygamy can also be polyandry, one woman with several husbands; as well as polygyny, one man with several wives.

So you have no biblical objection to it?

Regardless of your definitions, polygamy, married to more than one wife, is still illegal in Canada, and that is how it will be handled in court.

When it comes to marriage and divorce, that too is a Provincial and Federal matter and not church related, except when a marriage takes place in a church atmosphere. Both unions and marriages and divorces are legal in Canada.

We, ministers, are licensed by the province, not by any church, in Canada. We need to obtain a new licence in each province as well.

    Cheers,

    Jim

Nope. Many of the great characters of the Bible had multiple wives.

Many of the great characters in the Bible also murdered people and committed adultery. You okay with that?

    Your argument is invalid.
