Pope John Paul II may or may not win the Nobel Peace Prize on Friday. But many Italians and other supporters are convinced that he should get it and that, given his health, this may be his last chance.

The debate over whether John Paul, 83, should receive the world's top peace award is tangled up in the fact that he is at once a head of state with a political role and a religious leader with a view of morality that has its share of critics.

John Paul has made repeated appeals for peace throughout his quarter-century papacy. Returning to the theme this week during a visit to southern Italy, he said the new millennium had begun "lashed by winds of war and etched by blood in so many regions of the world."

I was curious why a Lutheran bishop would say that RC theology favors death so I did a web search. See link http://www.catholic.net/rcc/Periodicals/Igpress/2001-12/profile.html :

“The current Roman Catholic theology is one that favors death rather than life,” said Lutheran Bishop Gunnar Staalsett, in an outburst against Catholic opposition to the distribution of condoms. “Religious leaders must be outspoken,” he added. “Condom use should be tolerated as a way to stop the spread of AIDS.”

The Lutheran bishop opposes the Nobel prize for the Pope because the Catholic church has a theology that favors death; however, it appears that the bishop's church has its own theology of death. See link http://trushare.com/01jun95/JU95BALT.htm

The need for this was the more apparent, as after 1975 a new abortion law regenerated antagonism between church and state. Initially the bishops voiced very strong opposition and even threatened to disestablish the church over the issue, but after a while the bishops not only became quiet but began to remove - and even defrock - clergy who upheld what had till then been the church’s official position.

“Religious leaders must be outspoken” and then defrocked!

John, are you advocating the myth that c o n d o m use curbs the spread of AIDS?

    For what it's worth ...

As was noted in the story that Sue originally linked, Bp. Staalsett is no longer on the committee that selects the Peace Prize winner. (His term apparently ended last year).

Here's the current lineup -- for those of you with an encyclopedic knowledge of Norwegian political and academic figures ...

No. Simply pointing out the hypocrisy of the bishop.

No. Simply pointing out the hypocrisy of the bishop.

Then, your initial post concerning c o n d o m use loses its substance, for it is built upon this false presupposition.

I believe that John Gilmore thinks the Lutheran bishop is a Nimrod. I would concur.

Knowing the political situation in Norway a little. I'd say that JP's chances are much better than those of president Bush.

I was simply quoting the bishop. How is this a false presupposition?

    1. The bishop says the Pope should speak out against the RCC's theology of death.
    2. The bishop defrocks priests in his own church that speak out against the Church of Norway's theology of death.

All those who are desirous of the Holy Father winning the Nobel Peace prize perhaps should remember the words of the Lord spoken through His servant James:

Jas 4:4 Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.

What the Church needs is a pope who makes the worldlings gnash their teeth in anger. Oh, I know....he does already with his uncompromising stand for life, sexual sanctity, and morality. But he could go further and stop this ecummenical nonsense he is caught up in as well as ridding the Church of the bishops who oppose the Catholic Faith.

Well, let's hope that when God gives us a new pope he will be embued with power from on high and the courage to use it against God's enemies in the Church.

Some people fergit this is a war, ya know?

Well, actually the data supports the statement that c o n d o m use curbs the infection rate of HIV.

    Am I misunderstanding your statement?

    Thanks.
