Pride is probably our greatest hurdle to becoming the man or the woman that God created us to be.

Last night, I was doing some reading and writing our weekly MentorUs resource, and I came across this verse. It isn’t new, but it hit my heart in a brand new way:

Ephesians 5:21: Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.

That word submit gets a bad rap sometimes. We say it in our wedding and then resent it in our marriage. But the word submit simply means “to put someone else ahead of yourself.”

Your preference is more important than my preference.

Your desires more important than my desires.

Your wishes more important than my wishes.

You being right more important than me being right.

You are more important than me…that is submission.

God’s desire is that both people in a marriage make the other person more important than themselves.

Over the last week, we’ve had several people e-mail us or talk to us personally about pornography. How did I stop watching it? Do I have a desire to watch it? Am I still addicted to it? How did we overcome it?
What I’ve realized is what kept me in bondage to a sexual addiction wasn’t porn; it was pride. It was a lack of submission. My pride wouldn’t allow me to admit my problem. My pride wouldn’t allow me to seek help. My pride was more important than submitting to Christ or to my wife. My pride was bigger than my porn problem. My pride kept my porn problem big.

Pride is a cancer that will eat us alive.

There is more than one page.

Amen to that. Pride is an underlying cause of many, if not most, problems.

Nothing "external" is the problem. Our sinful heart is the problem.

Spiritual warfare exists in the heart of man, not over external "things."

Interestingly enough, I was thinking the same thing yesterday. I was reading Edwards’ The Freedom of the Will, and his discourse regarding the moral inability of man brought this to mind. I only note this because I was not expecting to “go there” when I began his book.

Addiction to porn or ANY other habit is due to one NOT realise and acting upon the biblical truths that we are now in Christ, have been positional set free from its domenion, that we have spiritual weapons for us that can and do empower us to overcome the enemies of our souls... Flesh, World, satan...

Satan biggest and most effective way to beat us down is to have us still willfully ignorant of knowing and applying those provisions laid up for us now in Christ jesus!

    Isn't it strange...

...that the cost to become addicted to porn, as the adult bookstores, is still a quarter?

The devil has found a great foot in the door technique, and he's managed to keep the price as they were 20, 30 and 40 years ago. The cost to seel your soul to the devil is cheap in the beginning!

You are on to something with your point. Porn is not the problem....never was....it is all about SIN, and when we allow this form of sin (like gossip, hate, anger, cursing, drinking to access, smoking, backbiting, idol worship - making money, having things, owning things, etc. - and division in the body) to get its foot in our moral door, it is often difficult to rid its presence before it sinks its nails into our flesh and soul and pulls us down with it.

Like you, I was caught up in the dark hold of this sin, and the more I resisted and tried to escape (it used to have me in bondage) the more difficult it was to break loose and remain free. It took an actual, failed attempt to kill myself to jog my spirit back into reality and see that porn was the destroyer of my soul. It continued, over time to rob me of my integrity; joy; peace; and all emotional, mental, and physical fidelity to my wife and Savior! And it came to the point of my rifle not firing, when I pulled the trigger, to realize how high the cost of that sin had become in my life. :tear:

Again, thanks for posting this controversial issue. It is a shame that more men have not gotten involved in this topic. It is my opinion, that a large number of men are, one way or another, involved with some form of porn, and if they don't get rid of the seeds planted by Satan, they will see the same cost being extracted from their spiritual well-being by the enemy.

A lady I know who was the wife of a pastor friend of mine started chatting online with a man from another country. Eventually she decided to visit him and one thing led to another. She left her home, her husband, and her entire family all because she let herself get trapped by the deception.

Think that many of us use the computer filtering programs, read the bible, pray, but there IS real help in having a strongly commited accountibility person/group to assist one in this!

I’ve said this before about another sinful habit, but it relates also to the sinful heart of one in bondage to pornography (whatever the format).
