I was reading Martyn Lloyd Jones today & he mentions that in the 18 Century that churches were going astray....since I dont know just exactly what Arianism is, could someone advise? Thanks

Below is an excerpt from Dr. Jones's writings as a frame of reference. He does not explain this but drops the bomb & moves swiftly on.

What about the other Churches? Presbyterianism had ceased to be. There had been a Presbyterianism in England, but it had become Arian in its doctrine. The Westminster Confession of Faith does not guarantee that you cannot go wrong doctrinally. It was the Presbyterians who went most astray and became guilty of Arianism, and Presbyterianism literally died. The Presbyterian Church of England which we have today is something quite new which only started in the last century. As regards Congregationalism, these Arian tendencies for a while even affected people like Isaac Watts and Philip Doddridge. The Congregationalists had also been affected by the Hyper-Calvinism, to which reference has been made, and we have been reminded also that among the Baptists there was this Hyper-Calvinistic teaching.

Now that is interesting! There is a story there Im sure. I think that is why Martyn Lloyd Jones mentioned it in the context of the development of the Welsh Calvinistic Methodist movement as a non-conformist break away church.

Interesting.....The Presbyterian church, really the model for "True Calvinistic Doctrine" turned Arian (according to ML-J) in the 18 & 19 centuries. Michael Servetus was executed (16th century) for teaching an anti-trinitarian theology. Boy, did his timing suck.

    "Arian" Christology

The Christology commonly called "Arian" holds that Jesus, before his human life, existed as the Logos, a being created by God, who dwelt with God in heaven. There are many varieties of this form of Unitarianism, ranging from the belief that the Son was a divine spirit of the same nature as God before coming to earth, to the belief that he was an angel or other lesser spirit creature of a wholly different nature from God.

Interesting, never knew presby to be like JW in regards to nature of Jesus!

Think most baptists today operate as Modualists, as we almost deal exclusively with Jesus as being God, neglecting father/Spirit!
