Right now it looks like the United States is the only nation who has taken a stand with Israel at this point. Right now, President Bush is having lunch with the leader of Russia, Mr. Putin. I am praying that President Bush will not waver in support of Israel and he will be strong and not waver with Russia because of free world trade (Russia wants to be part of the WTO.)

I am praying other nations will come to their senses and support Israel.

A leader of Hezbollah has given a speech on Hezbollah radio and calling for all out war in the name of mohammed and allah.

We also have several thousand Americans trapped in Lebanon right now. The fear is not that Israelis will shoot down Americans being airlifted out by helicopter, but that shoulder missles from Hezbollah will shoot our helicopters.

History refresher: Hezbollah bombed the Marine barracks in Lebanon in 1983 and killed 300 of our marines.

I pray America stands firm with Israel and that President Bush will not sell out Israel for any reason.

    Funny,

I don't see any American troops in Israel. America has done what it always done...paid lip service to supporting Israel. We call them our allies, yet act like it is nothing to us when our allies are attacked. We are happy to stand on our sidelines and cheer on the suffering when it is not us. If it were us who were attacked, we would be looking for more than just consent from allies. We would be looking for help.

Joseph, the way I understand it is that we have a Fleet in the Red Sea. The Americans trapped in Lebanon are civilians, diplomats, etc. The talk is to move our Fleet to the Mediterranean and then use military helicopters to fly American civilians out.

But you are right, we don't have any troops in Israel. Not yet. If need be, as stated on the other thread, I support sending US troops to help the Israelis. Sorry if you thought I meant troops are in Lebanon. I could be wrong, though, maybe we do have troops in Lebanon.

At this point, if the US actually did anything to support Israel militarily, that would only create more problems for Israel.

US fighting alongside Israel? That's a dream scenario for Islamists. They wouldn't even have to attempt to recruit fighters. We would alienate EVERY Arab nation, no matter how moderate or extremist. We would upset basically the entire world. IF Israel isn't getting enough heat.... just let us help them...and we will have a war across the entire middle east. We may get that anyway, but if we get involved, it would come a lot quicker.

    Stefan,

What did we do pre-9-11 to alienate every Arab nation and upset basically the entire world? What did Israel do last year around this time that caused the Palestinians to elect Hamas and attack them? Give them the Gaza Strip while throwing their own people out by force? Your assumption is in error in that you seem to think that Muslim extremists need to have a reason to hate America and try to hurt us. That is simply silly.

Do they like us? No. They hate us.

The difference is this...what would make the governments...not the terrorist orgs....attack us?

We are not at war with any Arab government. If we helped Israel, that would change...on a massive scale.

Besides, at this point there is no reason to help Israel through military means. They are handling the situation. Now, if Syria and Iran get involved, we may have no choice.

You may believe there are Arab governments who are our friends but the bottom line is they hate us. They just like all our money (foreign aid) we throw at them and how we make them rich by buying their inflated oil.

Look at Saudi Arabia for instance, who is supposed to be our great allie and who sends billions of dollars over here to fund Madrassas in the United States, radical mosques which preach Wahhabi islam, and infiltrate our colleges and universities with their political ideology. The only possible REAL friend we could have in the ME outside of Israel is the leader of Jordan who happens to be half Hashemite and half British, but he is married to a palestinian woman.

I personally am not afraid of the Arab countries and don't care whether they hate us or not.

Just for good measure, I'm going to top off my tank, before crude goes up to $100 a barrel, lol.

I don't trust any of the Arab nations, but I don't think most of them want open war. I think their prefered M.O. is to just milk the oil for all it's worth.

My position is that the US shouldn't do anything to escalate the conflict, but if the escalation comes from other factors, we should support Israel to the fullest, including military support.

UPDATE: There are 25,000 Americans in Lebanon right now. Why on earth would 25,000 Americans go to Lebanon, of all places, knowing Hezbollah is a stronghold there. There certainly isn't much there for tourism, is there? Oh, wait - maybe they are in Hezbollah training camps? Anyone know?
