I am not going to prom because all it is, is a formal dance and i don't go to dances, which are against the Bible(you know that book we read in church or in real churches we do). Also prom is a very costly thing sometimes people spend like 600 dollars for one night of their life? You should instead put that money in the offering plate at church, where it will be used wisely.

You're right Kayla, prom can be very costly, and I also consider it to be a waste of money since it's only for one night. But I think it's up to one to decide whether to make that expense or not. I for one, would rather use that money for college and further my education.
I'm still deciding whether to go to prom or not, that's why I asked if anyone was going to prom this year and where they got their dress.
All of my friends are going to prom, and they've been telling me that I should go, that the night won't be complete without me. Anyway, this is quite pointless since the odds of me going are pretty slim.

May I ask where in the Bible you found that?

Faith, I would suggest you go to the prom. Yes it's expensive, but you don't have to spend anywhere close to $600, none of my friends did. One of the best things you can do in High School is make great memories, and this is an opportunity for fantastic memories. Go and enjoy it!

prom is inmoral because of the stuff that usually happens afterwards. At dances and prom, you are dancing, in which you and a guy or girl are dancing very closely to each other. Which in fact might make bad toughts run through your mind. Umm.. now didn't Jesus say Mat 5:28 But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.

Why put yourself in the situation.

Kayla, if you knew me better you would know that I wouldn't place myself in a situation which might lead me to do something immoral.
If I do decide to go to prom, all I'll be doing is having fun with my friends, nothing more.

Then don't get involved with the "stuff afterwards".

My daughter is going to prom, with my blessing. She's a junior, and has ordered her dress from windsor online. She got it onsale for about $100.00. Her mom and I are only paying a portion. The rest, she's gotta supply herself. She's got a midnight curfew. Oh, she's going with a guy friend of hers, whom I know and of which I approve.

It would be a bit hypocritical for me as a parent to tell her that she can't go to prom, after I recently attended a formal Oscar party, don't ya think?

Yes I know I don't have to spend that much on prom, but there's still that voice in the back of my mind that tells me that I could use that money to help pay for my college books.
But then again, this is my Senior year and I want it to be a memorable year. I guess it's worth spending a little money even if it's just for one night. And like you said, I'll be making memories and having a good time with my friends.

Sounds like you're going Faith, good. [IMG] I'm sure you'll have a blast. Be sure to take lots of pictures, you'll have to show them to all your family later.

Kayla, you said dancing was condemned in the Bible. It's not. Do a study on dancing, you'd be surprised at how often it is celebrated by God.

No problem, glad to help. [IMG]

I don't know what study you did, but there is no place where social dancing is celebrated by God. I do know that Moses broke the 10 commanment tablets because he saw idol worship and dancing. Also King herod killed John the BAptist because of a dancing woman's request.

Prom is an exciting time. You can have fun without getting involved in "the stuff" that can hinder your beliefs.
Also, if you have any older friends or friends that have previously gone to the prom, you might be able to borrow a dress. There are ways to get out of the "expensiveness" of proms. Just be creative and have a good time.
    May God Bless.

Go! Have fun sharing the memories with your friends.

If you are looking for a cheaper formal type dress, try looking at JC Penney Outlet in the Bridal section. They have Bridesmaid dresses from about $30.00.

well, i'm in still in jr. hi. but i have known since i was in elem. that i was not going to prom. i asked my mom about it and she said that it was not a wise decision to go b/c there was alot of drinking, smoking (marijauna and cigarette, etc.), sex, and stuff that was condemned by the Bible. I knew that those for me when I get older were not right. she and i don't condemn dancing and social dancing. I do , though have problems with people dirty dancing and stuff like that. If it is a slow dance, fine, just don't let 'em touch you inappropriately (please, girls and guys, save it for marriage, it's better to say, this has only been for one person!) I know that many people will disagree with me, but I thing that it would be a wiser decision if you didn't go b/c there is SOOOOOOOO much you can get into. I'm not eve going to the big celebration for my last year @ jrhi! I hope that you pray about this and do GOD'S will, not your own (unless of course it's God's will)

Well it's good for you that you made that decision. But most Christian teens can have fun at the prom without falling into a pit of iniquity (especially because I think a lot of people overblow the "immorality" of the prom). The prom should be a great experience, so by all means, faith4life should enjoy it!

I'm not going next year. I agree with Lindz and Kayla here.
Unless there's a good many of adults supervising the event, there's a lot of room for inappropriate things to happen. I'd just rather avoid the appearance of evil.

    Kayla, Kayla, Kayla dear

I went to my friend's senior prom with him. I wore the same dress I wore for my sister's wedding so that didn't cost me anything, all I had to do was pay to get some earrings and get my shoes...a cost of about 30 bucks. There are great stores out now where they sell low cost dresses which are breath taking.

As for ungodly things happening at prom? At my prom, everyone was in the room dancing, we weren't allowed to dirty dance or we were made to get off the floor. As for closeness of slow dancing, once again if things got steamy it was stopped imediately, btw...those thoughts weren't even close to my mind that night, the guy I was with was strictly my friend and no romantic connection was there so we simply had fun hanging out.

As for after parties and things which may occur, why can you just simply not attend those parties? You know, you DO have a say in what actions YOU do and that means if something begins to happen which is against the bible, then make your stand firm and don't follow along, that is YOUR right.

To abstain from the prom or tell others it's wrong because of things you have heard or assume could be bad or wrong, that's up to you however it's nothing but assumption. That's like saying, I won't fly in an airplane because it could crash and kill me since there have been other crashes in the past, but it doesn't mean it will happen.

Dancing itself is a beautiful expression of celebration, yes can be turned into a dirty thing, but many things in life which are meant to be holy and beautiful can be made a filthy mess.

Faith...hun, pray about it, use the descretion of both your parents and God. As for expenses, think girl think hehehehe bargains are the best!!!! woohoo..in any rate have fun, and make good choices hunny..*spoken with a cute mommies voice* hehehehe ;) [IMG]
