What exactly is the purpose of the BB? I understand Christians need a place to fellowship. I understand there are times Christians need to bounce ideas off each other to solidify their own beliefs. I understand it is helpful to ask "where would you find Scripture" for situations.

But especially in the top part of the forums page, it appears to me that there is little fellowship. Ideas are not tossed around - it's more like a junior high game of dodgeball and brothers and sisters in Christ are "taking it" in the head. :tonofbricks:

Through my browsing, I have become increasingly convinced that I don’t really want to spend very much time here. The tone of many posts is not godly. Hiding behind “wanting to speak the truth and expose error” is the real desire to pull down others and puff up one’s self. That is the opposite of being an edifying Christian. And because my human nature tends to lean toward being critical, I don’t need the help. I am reminded of freshman college students spending hours on end debating “deep doctrinal issues”.

Don’t misunderstand what I am saying. I am all for exposing untruth and guarding against false doctrine. However, I am against spending time debating issues that are not going to be resolved by debating.

Charity, edification, comforting, lifting up the fallen - aren't these the things we are supposed to do for each other?

They will know we are Christians by how we dress, the music we listen to and our ability to crush each other in debates about anything and everything, and if we throw in some Scripture, we can look holy. :BangHead: I thought the Scripture said "they" will know we are Christians by our LOVE.

I think the Lord's been telling me that my DH, 3 year old DS and 19 mo old DD need my attention and time more than you do, anyway.

Is there a window where you are seated? Look out there - it's a world!

Ahhh. I think you've made a good point in the OP. I've been guilty of bickering back and forth myself. It is not good behavior for a professing Christian. There is much dis-unity here on the BB.

    Dear Trainbrainmommy,

First, if the Lord is directing you back to your family, that is where you should be. With two very young children and a husband and home, you already have fulltime work!

The fellowship area of BB is down below. Check in at coffeehouse, you will be more than welcome there, or just chat in the public women's forum. Up here it's often a three ring circus. Sometimes the Baptists here remind me of the old joke about Jews: two Jews and three opinions. We seem to be the same here....smile.

I've been on BB for a number of years now and I have learned a lot. I have had to dig into Bible much more than I probably would have done otherwise, and my faith and my ability to give a reason for it have been very much strengthened by being here.

I have also made some very good friends, and have had a chance to meet some of them personally, which has been a joy.

So here are some of the purposes BB serves:
    -- to hammer out theology
-- to witness to the many readers who never post
    -- to discuss current issues
    -- fellowship
    -- fun
....not to mention some terrific recipes posted down in the women's public section!

We have fought with each other, encouraged each other, prayed with each other, laughed and cried with each other. We have been through births, deaths, marriages, victories and losses with each other.

There are some people here I would trust with my life and some I would not trust with the trash. There are some whose posts I will always read and some whose posts I will usually ignore. It's a lot like real life that way.

BB is a good place for the person who is not able to get out much who needs some social life or just a chance at conversation or debate.

But if it is not for you, then nothing wrong with that! If you are a born again Christian you are our sister in Christ whether you stay or go and we pray for the best for you and your family always.

Hello Helen. I've been meaning to complain about the recipes being in the womens forum. I happen to be a great cook... love to cook... and I think you ladies could learn a little something from me....

It is descrimination... thats it.... descrimination! And on a Christian board! How dare you!....lol:laugh:

But really....... I am a good cook, and could probably add some great recipes to your collection... but i'm not about the join the women's forum. Grace and peace, RB

    trainbrainmommy,

I truly understand your OP. You must do what is best for your family first. If you find that any forum board is taking up too much of your time, or creating in you a critical spirit than by all means, put your family first. Someday we'll have all of eternity to get to know those we met here on the BB. But you've only got this here and now time to raise your kids and be a good wifey.

Reformed: LOL, a number of men have posted there and some of their recipes ain't half bad! The public women's forum is simply more about subjects women tend to talk about more; it is not limited to women, and there have been some great threads there started by men. Not to fuss, though. God bless.

Hey, Friend of God is a very good cook and very much a man and a lot of fun to talk to. Besides, why should a Calvinist be afraid of anything? LOL...

Well you have a point there. If God predestines me to go there .... all I gotta do is trust Him huh? We will see if He has predestined me to go to the women's forum. I just hope webdog is not watching.:wavey:

Helen's post #5 expresses my sentiments exactly

BTw, it's probably just my eyesight, that violet lettering is almost unreadable.

    trainbrainmommy,

Don't confuse hardball debating with trolling. We have folks coming in here firing shots in every direction. Their sole purpose is to make us angry, and they succeed. But eventually they go too far, and either we run them off or the moderators will ban them.

We don't like arrogance. We've learned to distinguish between arrogance and certainty. Certainty can be expressed without causing anger, but arrogance is usually evident on its face, and don't suffer arrogant people very long.

I don't mind spirited debate. As Helen said, we are sharpened by it. Debate that doesn't test me doesn't interest me. If I want cum-bah-yah, I'll go to the Common Ground Coffeehouse.

You do need a thick skin in the debate section. If you don't have it, you'll get one if you make many contributions. Take Helen for instance. She has one of the sweetest spirits of anyone on this board, but she can dish it out with the best of them. We love Helen, even when we disagree with her.

So take a deep breath, lurk around for a while, make a post when you feel like it and have fun.

Oh, and please change the color on your type, and please use a different font.

Hey, I'm with you here... I am a pretty good cook also!
I probably do more cooking than my wife.
I would love to see some new recipes, but to go into the women's forum.... Now that is just brave, and I don't think I am that brave.

BTW, I found a great Bar-B-Que sauce last week... Baby Ray's, I of course added honey to it, and it made it better...... Had some of my Bar-B-Que chicken for lunch. We were snowed in today... got about 10 inches of the white stuff overnight... so I got to cook today after posting my Sunday Sermon online so the members could still see it.

As for BB, there have always been people that have hashed it out over theology. It is called apologetics. This is just modern day apologetics.
A couple issues that come to mind that were settled in good ol fashioned debates like on here are the Canon of Scripture, and The Trinity.

BUT.... even though we go around and round on here, when someone needs something... we are here for each other....

Sorta reminds me of a real family.
    Helen is right.

I have met friends here that I wouldn't trade for the world.
But you do what you need to do for your family.
I also feel presure to do more. I have tried to limit my posting to BB til after 10 pm. and through the days while I have nothing else to do, and I get a chance to check my email, and the goings on here on BB.

Helen, you expressed many people's sentiments with your post.

I especially appreciated this statement.....

Seriously, though, your post in it's entirety pretty much summed up the genuine value of the BB.

Other men post in the women's forum. As a matter off act you'll see some of them quite often. Rob (Friend of God) posts recipes regularly. we'd love to have you, we all love new recipes, and we talk about our menus for that night.
