Qana: A 7-hour time gap between hit & building collapse

The missile was fired at the Qana building at 1 a.m. Lebanese time. According to scores of local reporters, the building collapsed at about 8 a.m. – leaving open a seven-hour gap military officials currently are attempting to analyze.
Two other missiles were fired in Qana during the seven-hour period, but the targets were hit correctly and were accounted for. Military officials ruled out the possibility a second Israeli missile struck the building seven hours after the initial strike.
Among the explanations for the time gap being studied are that the missile that hit the Qana building badly damaged the infrastructure, but the structure was held together for another seven hours and then collapsed of initial damages; or that the building housed weapons that exploded later, causing the structure to collapse.
Military officials say they are not ruling out the entry of a "third party" that detonated explosives seven hour later, although they have no information this occurred.
"I don't want to get into conspiracy theories," said Israeli Air Force chief of staff Amir Eshel. "We will work diligently and collect every detail, so as to understand what happened there. I hope that we will know in the end, but I'm not sure. It's possible that we will never know what exactly happened there."

Three news agencies on Tuesday rejected challenges to the veracity of photographs of bodies taken in the aftermath of an Israeli airstrike in Lebanon, strongly denying that the images were staged.
Photographers from The Associated Press, Reuters and Agence France- Presse all covered rescue operations Sunday in Qana, where 56 Lebanese were killed. Many of their photos depicted rescue workers carrying dead children.

A British Web site, the EU Referendum blog, built an argument that chicanery may have been involved by citing time stamps that went with captions of the photographs.

For example, the Web site draws attention to a photo by AP's Lefteris Pitarakis time stamped 7:21 a.m., showing a dead girl in an ambulance. Another picture, stamped 10:25 a.m. and taken by AP's Mohammed Zaatari, shows the same girl being loaded onto the ambulance. In a third, by AP photographer Nasser Nasser and stamped 10:44 a.m., a rescue worker carries the girl with no ambulance nearby.

The site suggests these events were staged for effect, a criticism echoed by talk show host Rush Limbaugh when he directed listeners to the blog on Monday.

"These photographers are obviously willing to participate in propaganda," Limbaugh said. "They know exactly what's being done, all these photos, bringing the bodies out of the rubble, posing them for the cameras, it's all staged. Every bit of it is staged and the still photographers know it."
The AP said information from its photo editors showed the events were not staged, and that the time stamps could be misleading for several reasons, including that web sites can use such stamps to show when pictures are posted, not taken. An AFP executive said he was stunned to be questioned about it. Reuters, in a statement, said it categorically rejects any such suggestion.

"It's hard to imagine how someone sitting in an air-conditioned office or broadcast studio many thousands of miles from the scene can decide what occurred on the ground with any degree of accuracy," said Kathleen Carroll, AP's senior vice president and executive editor.
Carroll said in addition to personally speaking with photo editors, "I also know from 30 years of experience in this business that you can't get competitive journalists to participate in the kind of (staging) experience that is being described."

I know that buildings in NYC collapse from time to time. Often a building is damaged when the one next door is being renovated and collapses days or weeks later. We're so used to seeing controlled demolitions where the blasting is set just right that we have come to think of damaged buildings collapsing instantly.

On the other hand, who knows? Until it is investigated properly - if it ever is - I'll tentatively go with the obvious.

The world awoke Sunday to the news that an Israeli airstrike killed 57 Lebanese civilians, leading Israel to stop airstrikes for 2 days - but evidence indicates the "massacre" may have been a fraud.

The supposed massacre caused a major turnabout in world diplomacy. US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice suddenly canceled her plans to fly to Beirut, saying "my work towards a ceasefire is really here [in Jerusalem] today." The implication was clearly that the onus was now upon Israel. French President Jacques Chirac condemned Israel's "unjustified action which demonstrates more than ever the need for an immediate ceasefire," Jordan's King Abdullah called it an "ugly crime," and other world leaders echoed these sentiments.

Though Israel emphasized that Hizbullah was to blame for waging its rocket war against Israel from within a civilian population, Foreign Ministry officials repeated their "deep regret at the loss of innocent life in the campaign against Hizbullah," and were forced to promise a "thorough and comprehensive examination."

However, the incident may have been all one big fraud, staged by Arab elements for the world media in order to lead precisely to the situation described above.

Agreed. That's why I think that Israel is tactically correct to refuse a ceasefire.
Heck, even boxers know that if they're giving the other guy a good beating they gotta keep on going until the other guy's either knocked down or knocked out.
And even the neophyte boxing fan knows that a referee who keeps asking for a time out to fix the beaten boxer's laces, or inspect his face, or see if his mouthpiece is still there even if nobody saw it fly out, well, this referee is probably partisan or dirty, or both.
