Broadly speaking, "missionary Baptist" usually means the "missionary" side of the Baptist division in America circa 1820-1840. The "missionary Baptist" first referenced in this topic is probably a member of the American Baptist Association, the Baptist Missionary Association, or the Interstate & Foreign Landmark Missionary Baptist Association. These are groups that left the Southern Baptist Convention over mission methods and other issues. There is no universal consistent use of the term "missionary Baptist," but it seems most likely to refer to any of these and other similar groups that left the S.B.C. between 1890-1910 (and some as late as 1950). Southern Baptists are missionary Baptists, but usually only put Baptist on their church sign, and refer to themselves as Southern Baptists. Independent Baptists are (usually) missionary Baptists, but normally prefer to call themselves independent or fundamental rather than missionary. Actually, there may be no "correct" answer to this question.
