actually, in Genesis 3:21, they wore coats of skin. the Hebrew word used was kethoneth, a long shirt like garment. robe? sounds like it to me.

Then we men violate that when we wear pants. Men should not be wearing pants to church, as it is not biblically modest.

Hey, it's all or nothing if you're gonna use that verse. That verse doesn't mention modesty or fashion, but instead was intended to address their vulnerability. To imply that the verse lays down the framework for Christian modesty is nothing short of adding to scripture.

BTW, I wore shorts and a polo shirt to church last weekend. By your reckoning, I'm not properly covered up.

I reiterate what I said earlier:

You're welcome to fly out to Hawaii, visit every church that meets on or near the beach, and tell them that they're not dressing in accordance with scriptural modesty.

They'll likely think you're being pharasaical, and tell you to go back to the mainland. And they're be right in doing so.

so every church by the beach dresses the same? are you the representative for all those churches? you are playing a very dangerous role. i have friends/family in the Philippines, Hawaii, Guam, and California- they to would consider wearing bathing suits to church immodest. anything else about culture you are willing to speak about? is it so impractical to wear anything else besides swimming gear to a church service?

No. That doesn't condemn those who do.

Then they are not required to wear bathing suits to church. However, they'd also be wrong to judge those that do, if the local church decides that the circumstnaces warrant it as acceptible.
That's a different question that presuming scripture forbids it as immodest.
You were using the Genesis verse to make a claim for scriptural modesty guidelines. Those guidelines say that I was wrong to wear shorts and a polo to church last weekend. If you don't adhere to that in the verse, you're simply picking and choosing what you consider modest, and making it the litmust test for evryone else.

well johnv, nice debating with you. i am leaving for a moment and will be back on later. i am pretty sure we are arguing for the same side. i just need to touch every angle so that my girlfriend will be ready to talk to her pastor's wife.

one more thing. we can judge, as long as it has a Godly perspective not a personal one.

We are commanded to judge righteous judgment according to the scriptures.(John 7:24) We repeat what God has already declared in His Word.

God-fearing people have looked the other way and kept their mouth shut for too long as to what thus saith the Lord concerning sin and that's why America is in the shape it's in.

I can't stand to see the nakedness that has become the norm for gals, nor can I stand to see those nasty sodomite britches that are so popular with the guys.

Oh bother! This one is going around again?

    1. What the majority decides, on the beach or off of it, does not make right right. Modesty is not exemplified by bathing suits, no matter what!

    2. 1 Tim. 1:17, along with many other verses, tells us that to God is due all glory and honor. It is not wrong to dress up a little for church. It is wrong to show off, but it is just as wrong to pretend church is nothing more than another place to visit no matter what you are wearing.

    3. ANYTHING that draws attention to the sexual side of your body is wrong in church. It doesn't matter if it is a skirt, dress, shorts, pants, kilt, whatever. Drawing attention to that side of your body means you are distracting some from worship. That is definitely wrong. (It ain't so right any other time outside of the marriage bedroom, either!)

    4. Encouraging others in their time of worship and praise means dressing modestly without pretension. Personally I do have a problem with jeans on girls/women in church, but that is my problem, I think, not theirs. As long as they aren't skin-tight or super low-cuts, my problem is simply that: my problem.

    5. Fashions change. Honor and respect for God and others do not.

P.S. I'm sitting here typing in jeans and a striped t-shirt. And I would bet no one would ever mistake me for anything but an over-40 lady! For me, jeans and a t-shirt are almost like a uniform as I clean house, work in the yard, and deal with the animals and our retarded son's (almost 21 years old) diaper changes!

the issue of dresses only started, I believe, because of the verse about it being wrong for men to dress in women's clothing and women to dress in men's clothing. It is clear now that there are modest and acceptable women's pants that would look rediculous on men... more room in the back and less room in the front. However, many women still wear dresses and skirts to hold onto something old fashioned and also as personal convictions concerning thier reverance toward the Lord. I agree that it should not be taught as a legalistic issue or as an issue of spirituality. HOWEVER I feel that it is not wrong for a church to set a dress code for it's own church. These are my observations and oppinions, thank you for allowing me to contribute :D

What in the world are sodomite britches??? [IMG]

    I don't recall a Bible verse calling swimsuits immodest. . . What's your authority?

The Bible does not go into much detail about what exactly needs to be covered up. The only real guidance we get is the NT passage about the unpresentable parts of the body being given special modesty. I guess others are defining unpresentable parts of the body differently!

Exodus 28:42 And thou shalt make them linen breeches to cover their nakedness; from the loins even unto the thighs they shall reach:

sounds to me like in order to cover the nakedness it has to cover the thighs

lol, last time I checked they were human beings. if thier loins and thighs count as nakedness, why wouldn't anyone esle's? and as baptists don't we believe in the sainthood and priesthood of all believers? and that we're called to be holy? I'm just saying, you can make all the excuses you want, but you cannot deny that the bible does give us an example here about what godly covering includes. weather or not you live to those standards is your choice. I'm just saying what the bible says, not adding anything to it. what you do with it is between you and the author
