Dr. D.Martyn Lloyd-Jones had a surgical approach to hos preaching. He wanted to narrow-down on the vitals. so he would reguraly ask many successive questions with which there was no way of escape --logically and biblically there was no place to hide.

I think his record was 18 questions in a row. In this example a mere eleven. The following is taken from I Am Not Ashamed (pages 123,124). Originally preached in the Spring of 1964.

My dear friends,I plead with you,I ask you again this question: Have you been called? Have you ever before realised the meaning of the day of Pentecost? Is your life based on God the Father,God the Son,God the Holy Spirit? What does all I have been saying mean to you? Have you been reading with detachment, just wondering how long it was going to go on,and hoping it was going to end soon? Or have you been hanging on my words because you have felt this to be vital to your soul, and you want to take in every word of it? Have you felt that you dare not live, you dare not die unless you know? Do you know whom you have believed? Do you see the purpose of God in your life? Are you in his purpose? Is this the most vital thing in the whole world to you at this moment? If it is,then I am glad to tell you that the Holy Spirit has done his work,he has called you! Called you out of darkness into God's marvellous light.

This man had a genius intellect, was a MD (tops in his field at the time) with a career in the Health Care industry that would have cemented his prosperity (economically). Yet he transitioned into being a simple pastor in Wales that eventually led him to Westminster. This man was the personification of a great Evangelical & I have nothing but admiration for him BTW, Dr. Lloyd Jones was a devout Calvinist. You go Doc ...:love2:

Questions can be a very useful tool. I have asked them, and I have even allowed them to be asked. For about year I led a small church of just 10 people. I would preach, including questions quite often and when I was done I opened up the floor. People could ask questions during the sermon, but the real discussion came at the end.

I saw a lot of growth in that time. However, the discussion method works best in small groups I would think.

Asking questions of the audience helps your people think through the text that's being addressed. It supports the biblical mandate to love God with all our mind. It re-enforces the reality that our faith is not blind and was never intended to be.
