Rankings of individual law enforcement personnel

    I'm sure you've seen on the media different stories about various police activities down through the years.

    Since I have a military background, I've been interested in how individual law enforcement personnel acquire their various ranks (e.g., sergeant, lieutenant, captain, etc.).

    There doesn't seem to be any real consistent pattern in their rankings. I've seen police captains of little cross roads villages display a rank insignia of five stars while the commandant of that same state's highway patrol only wears the rank insignia of only a colonel.

    Does anyone out there know if there's some kind of consistent criteria for assigning these rankings?

    I'm SURE that good ole boy politics has absolutely no part in this.....right?!!?

    Criteria? Depends on the jurisdiction.

    This should be an area that the State/Commonwealth should have standards.

    For Example - Commander of the
    State Troopers--------3 Stars
    County Sherriff--------2 Stars
    Town Chief-------------1 Star
    Village Chief------------Colonel

    Standards????

    Law enforcement have standards????

    Perhaps the question should be, why does law enforcement rank so badly with controlling major crime that in one generation we went from open doors on houses and rarely locked cares to what exists?!

    Time was when Bonny and Clyde were shot without Miranda rights or trial by jury. If the government can burn down people in a cult in Waco, what is so wrong with cleaning up the cities were the citizens can live in peace.

    Law enforcement certainly rank!

    The department I worked with had the following rank structure.

    Sheriff **** 4 stars
    Under Sheriff *** 3 stars
    Assistant Sheriff ** 2 stars
    Commander * 1 star
    Captain double silver bar
    Lieutenant single silver bar
    Sergeant 3 tier chevron
    Senior Deputy 2 tier chevron
    Deputy no insignia

    But that was a large department with over 7000 sworn personnel.
