Suppose you felt a call to help reach an unreached people group. How would you start?
Start a small group to reach the lost here and now.
Study God's Word.
Seek wise counsel.
Start the small group praying for how to reach the lost there.
Google the concept . . .
Study ethnography . . .
Do a people study . . .
Focus the small group on how to reach the lost there.
Raise support . . .
Pack bags . . .
Get my Visa . . .
Buy a ticket . . .
Have fun . . . (aka take a short term mission trip first)
If God says jump - jump then ask how high . . .
I'd begin by meeting them as people. Get to know them and find out what their needs are. You'd be surprised how basically all humans have the same basic wants and needs. Opportunity will present itself if it is Gods will. Otherwise you just made good friends and met good people.
Good advice from El_Guero and LeBuick.
If you are talking about practical steps to actually becoming a missionary, contact your friendly local mission board and see what they are doing--in your case the SBC International board, right? Another option is a board that specializes in reaching the unreached, such as New Tribes Mission, at www.ntm.org
Oh, never even consideered that kind of unreachable???
We had a lady visit our Church who testified of doing missionary work in Northern Africa. She lived with no electricity, running water etc... She explained how pennies a day really went a long way in an area like that but because of skimming at the top, all they received were pennies.
What a sacrifice to make. My prayers are with you if this is the direction you are heading.
Thanks for the ideas, guys. I guess you are all guys anyway. I'm just thinking and praying right now, so we'll see where that goes. So far my thoughts about how to start are pretty much along the same lines as yours.
Which people groups are you investigating?
PS I have found that I need to use netscape instead of IE to load their software.
I'd rather not say, if that's OK, mainly because I am not sure. Thanks for the links, by the way.
Choose a group of 10 to 20.
Pray for them each day for one to two weeks.
Then go back over them and pick out 5.
Study them and see how God develops your burden for them.
Narrow them down to 2 or 3.
Begin preparing for a short term mission trip to one of your picks.
