OK...I've waited this long to enter the fray. If any of our BB family who are KJVO (of which I useta was one) can give the rationale for the last portion of Acts 12:4 to be translated thus in the KJV:

"...intending after Easter to bring him forth to the people."

I will revert to my once-dearly-held KJVOism.

Moreover, if, as most them claim, the KJV IS THE "Word of God," as in Romans 10:17 ("So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God,") then please explain how faith, an integral part of one's salvation, came to anyone prior to 1611 (Which, of course, would have included ALL of the KJV translators themselves). Unless, of course, there was a "Word of God" before 1611. AND, if such was, indeed, the case, why would God have needed a second "Word of God" (the KJV) if one already existed?

As I've said before in several of my posts, I'm NOT a KJV-hater. I enjoy reading it, and my signature below is a quotation from it. Back in the early 1970's I authored a tract, "Baptism" in the KJV, giving my reasons why I believe that this word was NOT an incorrect translation of its Greek root word in the times in which the KJV translators lived.

However, over the years I've come to re-evalute my position on KJV-onlyism. If one wishes to use the KJV, then that's fine with me.
    ----------------------
And I won't even bother to touch the first part of James 2:3 ("And ye have respect to him that weareth the gay clothing....)

Several problems with your former position!

Why the KJV, and not the Vulgate, or Tynsdale, or geneva bibles?

As you stated well, could any be saved before 1611 by any other bible version?

which is the real word of god, hebrew/Greek texts, or KJV?

Why do some say KJV perfect/only english translation, when the translators themselves said otherwise?

Does that mean no other version can be used by God to save us today? So everybody has to learn english?

5:12 : death pervaded the whole human race
6:19 : to use language that suits your human weakness)

It is slightly on the liberal side;but not so much as the New English Bible. The REB cleaned up a lot of what came before and made it more orthodox.

It reads very elegantly. It's probably uses the best English style for a Bible translation of the 20th century. By that I do not at all mean that it's written in the vernacular of the day. It has an older feel without the KJV isms.

Like a british version of the 1984 NIV?

Would the NRSV be likem a british ESV, better to study from than REB?

The NRSV is an American production. But the closest thing to the ESV is indeed the NRSV and in my opinion the latter is slightly better.

The NIV (of whatever incarnation) ESV and NRSV are all better to study from than the REB.
