Remember Elian?? How sad!

I simply wanted to point out that it was not "guns blazing" as if the government opened fire on that home in Miami where Elian's family were defying the government's rightful demand that he return.

Sounds like the description of what Elian's family was doing by making him a symbol of anti-Castro defiance.

Since the family was acting so erratically, and were refusing to obey a lawful federal order, it was appropriate to go in there with enough force to prevent anyone from getting hurt. Riot gear and assault weaponry actually deters violence since it sends a strong message that you mean business and will not tolerate resistance.

Of course the Branch Davidians fired first on the ATF and then committed mass murder/suicide...

I've never been a fan of Janet Reno, but she did the right thing in both of the cases you mentioned.

Actually, I'm glad she did the right thing.

 

Clearly those guns were unnecessary in dealing with unarmed people. But then hey.. getting him back to the beloved communism as soon as possible makes it all worth while. It certainly makes anyone who opposes Bush on so many domestic policies hypocritical to support this.

 

How do you know they were unarmed? How would the government know they were unarmed beforehand?

I don't opposed Bush "on so many domestic policies" so I'm not hypocritical.

I've voted for Bush three times (once for Governor and twice for President) and I'm one of the few people I know that still like him.

She wrongly doubted the pure motives of the government and tried to thwart "the inevitable". Who was she to try to stand in the way of agreements the Dutch government had with Germany?

 

Of course the people her family protected were going to be imprisoned and murdered. Elian is in no danger of murder. The Cuban government wants to use him symbolically. His Miami relatives ensured that he would have propaganda value for Castro.

 

The feds should have left him here.

So we should detain foreign citizens(who have committed no crime or not suspected of a crime) because we don't like their goverments politics?
Elian did not ask to be a citizen here, and can not ask until he is an adult, or is in the custody of his gardian and they both want to be here. Whats written on the statue of liberty says nothing about detaining foreigners and making them live here, especially minors who have a live parent in their country of origin.

New evidence suggests that INS chief Doris Meissner knew that Elian's father was acting under duress. And that she tried to suppress it.

 

It doesn't matter, you do not hold a foreign citizen who has not committed or not suspected of committing a crime captive. You can not keep a child from his parent just because you do not like his politics.

 

I think is twas right that he went back to his Father. Anyone who would try to keep me form my child is in for some trouble. However, I do understand the concern about his going back to communism. It is evil, it is more than politics and it is as religious as anything else.

 

So does our country keep families apart because of their religious preference now?
Still no one has addressed the fact he was a foreign citizen, not accused of a crime, not suspected of a crime, and we were supose to detain him indefinitely because of his father's politics and now religion. Do we routinely detain children without legal cause and not allow them to go home to thier country where they hold citizenship, and where their parent and legal guardian lives?
