In one of Reagan's campaigns he said "to send the welfare bums back to work,"

However, he found there were not enough jobs just as it isn't today so kicking them off welfare was like sentencing them and their children to a starving death.

His stories, though witty, are not realistic.

It would be more realistic to say there was a plantation owner who hired thousands of workers to grow his grain and bake his bread. Except when the bread was baked, he gave each worker half a loaf to last until the next harvest and he stored the rest for himself. During the next harvest, as the workers began to store his new years fresh bread they found themselves having to throw away tons of old molded bread from the past years harvest. They said to themselves, why must we starve trying to make a half loaf last an entire year for our families when he has so much bread that we throw away molded remains each year.

So the workers organized and the rest is history...
