Civilised countries do not execute anyone let alone the mentally ill. What next,? Down's Syndrome children, ADHD, HIV?

In the old testament it appears that when God orders the destruction of people the people were doing so much harm to those around them that it was devastating, and always when there was no sign of regret and when reptentance opportunities had been rejected many times. (He ordered societies wiped out that were guilty of human sacrifice, and child murder. Societies that were destroyed were not just societies that sinned, but groups that preyed on others. Sodom and Gomorrah were not destroyed because of homosexuality alone. Rather because the people of these cities were raping and attacking those who tried to behave in a godly manner.)

You mention Cain. He killed his brother, apparently in some kind of jealous rage. He showed no indication that he would ever kill again. I don't necessarily think he showed tremendous regret, but he did show a fear of God.

Moses also killed in a fit of passion, protecting a weak person from a cruel person, and murder does not appear to be his intent. He lost control. He deeply regretted what he did.

David killed in a panic. He had impregnanted another man's wife. The law said that he and the woman could be put to death. The only way he could be caught was if the woman's husband did the math. He committed a horrible, pre-meditated act to save his and his lover's skin. It was horribly wrong, but it did not present a threat to other members of society and David DID repent.

I firmly believe that Andrea Yates is a danger to society in general forever. She had medical care prior to the killings - yet she killed anyway, so we cannot look to her and say that medical care will protect society from her. She did not kill in a fit of passion, nor did she kill to protect herself from being caught in a crime. She killed the most innocent ones in society because she had decided they were not innocent. She is a danger.

There is also the fact that in lucid moments she must be suffering horrendously. If you got drunk or high on drugs and murdered all of your children would you want life or death?

As to Michael Woroneckie - he used to be a very popular speaker at Baptist Youth Groups all over the USA.

He made claims that he was once a priest of a Satanic Cult. Talks about a dysfunctional childhood, drugs, blood sacrifices. In fact, he used to spend about 45 minutes of his hour long speech talking about Satanic cult activities and 15 minutes talking about Christ.

Someone noticed that, said he was paying too much attention to Satan, not enough attention to Christ.

Someone else investigated his claims, decided he was an old fashioned con man. He "saw a parade and ran to get in front of it," then called himself the leader.

I don't know if he is or is not a Christian, but I do know that he is frightening.

Are you sure you're not getting him mixed up with Mike Warnke?

    Listen carefully,

The health of a nation depends on how that nation treats the sick, the poor, the powerless, the alien in their midst.

I am not making excuses anything, and I don't believe my post inidcates that I am. I am pointing out that they were NOT a threat to society in general.

As to Cain and Able, go back and re-read. If you don't think jealousy had anything to do with it you missed a HUGE part of the story.

And I will grant that Moses looked around, but the fact remains, he was acting out of reaction to the cruelty of a person to another person - and was reacting to the moment in passion.

And yes, I hold to my statement that David was in a panic. As you said, he had tried to get out of being caught another way. He tried to cover his trail, and Uriah didn't comply so he went with his plan b. Premeditated? That was obvious. Something he would make a habit of that would put society at risk? No.

I am still confused about what you are trying to say. Are you saying that a person shouldn't receive the death penalty as long as that person isn't a threat to society in general?

Since this page inadvertently was left open after the 3-page warning and there is still discussion, I am transferring it to the Politics Forum where it can go on for awhile.

You are wrong. And this is a big one. The Lord places a very high value on human life, therefore requiring the life of a murderer.
    Peace.

</font>[/QUOTE]This is a nonsensical argument. The Lord places a very high value on human life so let's kill some more, from death row or out on the battlefield.

I don't see any clear application of 1 Tim 1.16 to the death penalty. Paul is merely pointing out that he received mercy. This does not mean that the death penalty is not biblical.

BTW, I am not sure I am for or against the death penalty (I have been on both sides, both before and after being a believer), but in all the discssions on the BB and elsewhere among Christians, I have yet to see any clear biblical teaching that would override the Gen. 9 commandment that those who take life should forfeit theirs.

We could ship all murderers to New Zealand. Actually, the commandment to execute murderers was given to Noah and never revoked. Christ came to fulfill the law, not overthrow it, so I think that it still stands. One reason for all the murders in a diverse society is that there is no punishment for murder.

I do think, after reading the several articles posted, that her husband is as guilty in the death of those children as she was. She had been on anti-psychotic drugs for years and yet, they kept having children and he kept leaving them in her care.
