Washington state court upholds gay marriage ban

    Wed Jul 26, 2006 4:55pm ET
    By Daisuke Wakabayashi

SEATTLE (Reuters) - Washington state's highest court upheld a ban on same-sex marriage on Wednesday, ruling by a 5-4 majority that the legislature had the power to limit marriage to one man and one woman.

Nineteen gay and lesbian couples had challenged the constitutionality of the Defense of Marriage Act, a law passed by the state legislature in 1998 to restrict marriage to heterosexual couples.

I've read elsewhere that the homosexual lobby does not yet want to challenge DOMA probably due to the current make-up of the Supreme Court. An obvious reason to put conservatives in the White House (no, I don't believe Bush is a conservative, but so far I think his SCOTUS picks have done well).

Well, I agree. It should have been 8 to the one gay guy at the end of the bench. But 5-4 is a victory I will accept....

Settle down. No rational person wants to go back to the way things were 50 years ago. <edited - LE>

Some things were better, of course. But police were still beating confessions out of suspects, blacks were dying for trying to vote or just because someone thought they were "uppity."

Murder rates were much higher than today. We were dying younger from all sorts of causes. That stuff I don't miss.
