I have a 1975 version of The Open Bible, by Nelson. It was the first Bible I bought within days after I was saved. It had the same effect that you guys mention. The type and layout was such that you could "see" the scriptures. I looked at it again just yesterday and noticed several interesting things I had never thought about.

First, the type is hand set as opposed to computerized, as Bibles are today. There's a certain warmth about that that's hard to describe. Second, the KJV is the 1611, which really shocked me. I still can't believe it. All they did was change the spelling to bring it up to the 1970's common usage. Man, is it SMOOTH. But it's all marked up. I tried but can't use it except for occasional fun.

Also, I've dug a little into the Scofield since this thread has convinced me it's a must have for my collection. I have a waiting list but I'm leaning toward bumping it up to the top. I had no idea of its rich tradition, either. Of course I ran across many attacks on Scofied and his lifestyle, and even several lengthy articles about how Scofield was a hired gun, involved in a conspiracy with Zionists to advance the Zionist cause. Some even credit Scofield and his Bible as a major contributor to the creation of the state of Israel in 1948.

But I've seen enough to know I must have one. And I suppose the original Scofield for now. I just hope the typeset, etc. is as good as the older models.

    2 questions:

    1) Does the fact that he was a lawyer effect the way he writes on Romans?

    2) I know many KJVOs that love the Scofield Bible... How would they react when they found out his notes are based off the CT?
If they are true KJVOs, wouldn't they throw away his study bible?

Sorry for the off topic comment - but just had to share that this same Bible was my first Bible. It still is my main desk Bible and I use it daily, even though it is falling apart. I really love it

Lets see, old C.I. left his wife and child, propogated Darbyism like none other (Dispensationalism). He wasn't a Baptist. I threw my 'old' Scofield away - some of his notes are heresy, like for example that the churces in Revelation are "ages"

I love my Old Holy Scoly. As of late, I've been trying to find a large print Bible that's not too bulky to carry around and has space for notes. I can't find one that fits.

Calling the churches in Revelation ages is heresy?

You might not agree with it, but this is hardly heresy! Heresy involves denying an essential of the faith.

Click "Quarterly Report" then click Jan-March 2004. This is where you can find the info about the Scofield Study Bible.

You have to expect weird posting and hyperbole here in the "Bible Versions Forum." I'm sure some will even consider this posting to be "heresy."

What exactly is "the CT", from one who does not get the shorthand?

    Schofield Reference Bible

I have used a Thompson Chain Reference Bible for over 10 years. It has been my church Bible for that entire time and my study Bible off and on over that same period.

Late last year I won (though a competion at church) a Schofield Reference Bible and am using it this year for my morning devotions. Since it has the estimated chronological date of each book of the Bible on each page, I have decided to read the books in Chronolgical order of occurrance (roughly). I only read my Bible through 2-4 times per year, but sometimes I need to throw a myself a little curveball...

So far, I have thoroughly enjoyed the Schofield Bible and, while I don't agree with all the notes, I have found it especially helpful in places the Thompson Chain is not. I do not have a Strong's, Wilson's, or lexicon, so I have to depend on the studies of others...

Side Note on Scofield the non-Baptist

[Truthfully, Scofield was NOT Baptist, he was a Presbyterian and Pastored a Congregational Church, before devoting his time fully to completing his Bible.

Many of the great preachers and theologians of previous eras were not Baptists. However, as people and churches move "the ancient landmarks", you'll find the Congegationalists, Presbyterians, etc. to be more of a Baptist than the majority of today's Baptists!
