Don't like screaming, but loud is O.K. My God ain't dead and He"s not nervous either!

He can handle people getting excited sometimes. :D [IMG]

    Peace,

    Tam

I agree, Tam. Also, I don't like it when the preacher tells me how and when to worship. I mean, sometimes while at church, maybe while the choir or an individual is singing, I may lift my hands to the Lord and sometimes I feel like I "get lost" in worship. But I don't like it when a preacher or worship leader says "stand and lift your hands to the Lord" or something like that. In other words, I don't like it when they tell me when or how to perform some act of worship.

I'm not crazy about "screaming" or what I call "hacking" preachers either....but I do prefer they have some enthusiasm sometimes. For example, I know Charles Stanley is a great teacher and preacher, but I honestly can't listen to him for more than about 5 minutes without falling asleep or catching myself daydreaming.

    Generally, no.

No. In fact, it i sometimes repulsive to me spiritually.
Screaming easily ramps up to abuse. It's true in the home situation, and it's true in the pulpit. The ocaisional voice raising is one thing, but on the whole screaming? There are those who abhor some contemporary music because nothing more than "screaming with rhythm". If one can abhor such music, then it is reasonable to see why some abhor preachres who do nothing more than "scream with bible verses". It's not honoring, imo.

But, that being said, I don't think there's anything, in and of itself, scripturally wrong with it. If someone likes that type of sermon delivering, then that's fine too.

Well, as far as pentecostals go, the preacher is always in control of everything, even when they're praying in the Spirit, he sets the tone for everything. I visited one tonight, because my fiances aunt was in from upstate. Man, and I don't know what to think about some of the stuff that was going on. Maybe they really do have a more spiritual walk. I dunno, only God does. But they are real strict about the congregation obeying the preacher.

    No he is not
    No I do not
Not to have to hear loud garbled junk spit out at me.
Screaming preachers need a hearing aid so they can hear themselves and know how loud they are talking.

At one time screaming preachers were needed... before the sound system...

I remember one about ten yrs ago,,, He took the pulpit,, said in a normal voice, "You need to pray for me tonight, my throat is sore." and then immediatly started screaming... I mean the very next sentence.. and it wasn't sentences, but verses that he had memorized all jumbled up.. He would scream one from genesis, to John, to Job, all over the Bible, and never in context..

This went on for 30 minutes....
Then as fast as he started, he finished.. with....
"Let us pray" in a normal voice.

He stepped down and the deacon stood, and said,,"NOw that's what I call preachin'!!!"

My jaw dropped to the floor... because that's what I called ignorance.

Is your pastor a screamer? NOPE
Do you get spiritually fed by the screaming preacher? NOPE
Which is your preference? I prefer to listen to an exposition of God's word. Most expository preachers I know dont holler.

    Well, this has been interesting.

Some good preachers are anointed to be very loud...even screaming. If they stopped doing it they would be out of Gods will, and much less effective.

Other good preachers would be out of Gods will if they started screaming. God has not anointed them in that way.

There are so many wonderful televangelists who are very loud, and what a great anointing they have. They are used mightily by God. But there are just as many who are very quiet and reserved, and they teach and preach just as effectivly as the loud ones.

One is not effective by shouting or not shouting, but rather by sharing the truth in the way in which God has gifted you to share.

I'm not a preacher but I do testify sometimes as God leads...as I did last Sunday. I dont shout and never have. But thats just me. Others do get worked up, and brother what a blessing it is when they do!

Why? Because God is in it! If I shouted God wouldnt be in it.

    God bless,

    Mike

    donnaA,

What in the world are you talking about?

The scriptures never adress in the least the correct volume to use, the correct way to speak as one is preaching, how much of a pause to put in between statements, etc etc etc.

The ways in which people might share the gospel or teach are as varied as the types of personalities there are on the world.

To answer your question the scriptures never specifically say its OK to shout, and they never forbid shouting.

They are simply silent concerning the volume one uses when preaching.

Ultimetly it depends on whether God has gifted and anointed...or not...a particular preacher to be very loud at times during a message. If its Gods will for them to shout,(and many times it is) than they would be out of Gods will if they didnt shout.

Have you never been in a good service where the preacher is proclaiming Gods liberating gospel and he gets excited and touched by God during the message, and he SHOUTS from time to time as he proclaims Gods wonderful provision?

If not, you have missed a real blessing! [IMG]

    Grace and peace,

    Mike

    Amen, Mike!

Certainly there's a difference between a preacher that gets excited and shouts from time to time, and a preacher that constantly screams at his congregation like he's mad at them.

My pastor is passionate and firm when he preaches--doesn't scream.

I was in a service in a small building and the preacher screamed--my ears literally hurt. I got nothing out of the message 1)couldn't understand what he was screeching about and 2) all I could think of was my bleeding ears. lol

Oh, and some preachers now face permanent damage to their vocal chords--I know of one that's only in his 40's.

Can we now talk about "jumping" preachers? lol

Does anybody find a correlation between the screamers and the wanderers? That is, those who wander all over the stage, sometimes down on pew level, sometimes up and down the aisles.

I'm not particularly bothered by it, but it seems like it's a contrived pulpit preaching style.

Preachers, do any of you wander, or do you prefer to stay behind the pulpit?

I certainly don't mind an impassioned sermon or the occassional shout -- But I have heard some that screamed the entire sermon (on TV). *shudder*

In the early days, the pulpit was like a crate. It had sides to it and it was next to impossible to wander. One stayed put.

Secondly, I was taught how to preach in seminary. We learned how to project our voices, and therefore, shouting was not needed. One could preach loudly, where it was needed, without the aid of a stupid pa system.

I am not sure what some preachers think dancing fancily on the platform and shouting has to do with preaching. I always thought preaching was to effectively deliver the message God has laid on your heart for the people and not to entertain.

    Cheers,

    Jim

Ah, yes, the 'gift of shouting'. Remind me where that is in the Bible?

Yes, we forget the importance of "tradition" in Baptist circles.

I guess I can't remember hearing a screaming preacher scream a whole sermon? [IMG]

But I have set through preaching where the preacher raised his voice at times when making a point with passion. If a preacher was preaching in a steady monotone wouldn't be like listing to Howard Cosell?.....then agian.... theres one sure bet if a preacher preached like Howard....“he'd tell it like it was” [IMG]
