At the bottom right corner of my computer screen I have a small red shield with an "X" in it. A pop up window comes up with the message "You have a security problem". I have tried following the link. It will scan my computer and tell me that there is a problem but when I click on "remove" it does nothing.

I have run Norton and it doesn't find it. I tried to download AVG. It seemed to download but now I can't find it.

    Any suggestions?

If you hover over it, does it tell you what the program is? You might want to open up Task Manager and go through the list of processes, using Google to find out what they are.

It sounds like you have picked up some spyware/adware. Try running Spybot and see what it finds.

Download, run. Let it do each thing it prompts you for except TeaTimer. Then scan for problems if it hasn't already.

Let's start from the beginning; some more information is needed.

Are you talking about the bottom right of your computer screen? Or in your internet browser window?

Like Trotter asked, when you hover over it, what does it actually say?

You said you followed the link and it scans your computer; what window comes up when you follow the link? What program is scanning your computer?

Finally, what version of Windows are you using? Or is it an Apple computer?

If I don't do anythning for about 5 or 10 minutes, the link pops up in a new window. Not an option to go to the link, it is the VirusRemover2008 page that I opened.

I am starting to wonder if VirusRemover2008 might be the problem.

I followed this link. There is one that says "Recomended Download" and one that says "Download Now"

Which one should I click on?

I did a google last night and two links brought this software up and it started scanning my computer. The links looked quite valid in fact the description was just what I was looking for but it was this software instead.

I just scanned with defender and it found nothing so it hasn't insalled anything.

It sounds like it installed something on youirs somehow. Trust the link helps you.

I don't know what happened. This morning the problem was still there, but this afternoon I noticed that the problem program seems to be gone. I don't know if Norton got it or something else got it or if it is just hiding. At the same time that I saw that the "little red shield" was gone I also saw that I was recieving an automatic update to my windows. Who knows, maybe Microsoft finally did something good for us.

That would be the "Malicious Software Removal Tool." I have only ever seen it get one thing, so I guess I can up that to two. ;)

I just figured out what you meant. Any of the links under "Free Sownloads From" will work, as each one is just a mirror. Choose the one closest to you (I usually use the bottom FL one).
