Seminary, Dilultion of the Word, liberalism, conservative

I heard a preacher on TBN say that Seminaries are cemeteries.
I don't believe all of them are as bad as some people say they are.

Why would they say they are cemeteries?

Where in the NIV has "fornication" been replaced by"amoral?"

"No wonder we have so many sexual problems, since a whole generation has not seen this word in the Bible."

Oh yeah, right, that is the reason that our culture is so obsessed with sex...because of the NIV.

    Give me a break.

I'm not sure. I've never looked at an NIV. The article wasn't written by me.

I heard someone say this then I did a search on it.

I'm just asking people's opinions on the subject.

Just went to Bible Gateway and did a search on "amoral" in the NIV and came up with nothing. Might want to check what someone says to see if it's true (this is common with the KJVO argument from what I've seen). I know it's not always easy but it's important.

    1. This guy is clearly KJVO and has provided no evidence that the NIV translates porneia as "amoral."

    2. Why should he be taken seriously?

I'm just asking people's opinions on seminaries and why some people call them cemeteries.

    1. I agree that some seminaries are cemeteries in that they kill a person's faith and testimony, denying the divinity of Christ, the authority of Christ and so on.

    2. But it would be a gross mistake to categorize all seminaries as such. Neither Master's Seminary nor Southern Seminary fit this condemnation.

==I would argue that the person who wrote that probably has no personal experience with any major evangelical seminaries and has no clue what he is talking about. Certainly there are liberal seminaries that are "cemeteries", but the evangelical seminaries are not.

In my personal experience, most of the people who claim/preach that seminaries are cemeteries are people who are teaching false doctrine or who wish to excuse their ignorance of the Bible.

This doesn't even make sense. The author is saying that because the NIV uses a more general term to condemn immorality that we have more "sexual problems"? A more general term would condemn more types of sexual immorality, whereas the more "specific" fornication only condemns the one specific type of act.

Not only that, but the author saying that fornication is "amoral" shows more acceptance of it on his part than in anywhere in the NIV. Unless he means "immoral". (hint: look up definition of amoral).

Not only that, but fornication is (or was at the time the KJV was written) virtually synonymous with "sexual immorality" (see http://1828.mshaffer.com/d/search/word,fornication). The meaning included adultery and incest.

Well then don't post up something if you don't even support it. This is equivalent to back-bitting and slandering someone. At least post something about what you think and interact with your cut and paste piece.

I just don't understand why someone who post something so inflammatory and not even bother to interact with or get to know the piece. Strange.

Right... I suggest checking at least some of the facts (like definitions of words you may not know like "amoral").

"For example, the word “fornication” has been completely removed from the NIV and “amoral” substituted"

==The above statement is simply untrue. Anyone who has read the NIV, owns a NIV concordance, or has access to the internet, knows that the NIV does not use the term "amoral". The term translated "fornication" in the KJV is translated "sexually immoral" in the NIV. The term is "pornio" which refers to any sexual misconduct. It can be used of fornication, adultery, homosexuality, or any other sexual sin.

The term "amoral", which is not used in the NIV, means that morality does not exist. So the author you quoted is also wrong when he states that "Fornication is certainly amoral". In that statement he is claiming that fornication is not right nor wrong!! I doubt that is what he means, but that is what he is saying. How does that happen? Ignorance, thats how! It is very clear that the guy who wrote that website has very little understanding of the issues and has done very little personal research of these issues. I would not advise anyone to take anything on his website seriously. In fact, I would never bother visiting that website again. If the author gets basic things like this wrong, what else will he get wrong?

O, and btw, the author is refering to the unaccredited Trinity Seminary and not the major, evangelical seminary Trinity Evangelical Divinity School. I honestly doubt, however, that the author of the website is aware of the difference.

    PS...

I tried emailing the author of the website to see if he could point me to a place where the NIV uses "amoral" instead of "fornication". His mailbox was full, so my email never went through. Well, I tried...

Well you really shouldn't have added this if that was your intent:

Another good reason not to read the NIV.

I heard a preacher on TBN say that Seminaries are cemeteries.
I don't believe all of them are as bad as some people say they are.

Why would they say they are cemeteries?

That is inflammatory around here and you should know better. (Not being harsh just honest.)

Now for my reply to your last question about seminary/cemetary?

It nearly rhymes and is funny to say. Always gets a laugh in a Christian crowd.

Just fyi, I had a great time at seminary and really grew in my faith in the areas of academia and praxis. I made some good friends and have some amazing ministry partners because of it. It wasn't a cemetary for me. I did know plenty of young men who it became cemetary for while they were there. They went with a burning passion and calling for ministry and either never left or left with their fire all but extinguished. That was sad to watch. Seminary was a great time for me and most of my friends. :)

Listening to TBN, where ignorance is glorified and most unbiblical teaching I've ever run across is the norm, will not do you any good.

Seminaries teach our elders how to correctly handle the Word of God. I cannot imagine pastoring without Seminary training, or a church having a pastor who was simply ignorant and unable to give answers to those who ask.

Start visiting seminary websites, read their journals, and TURN OFF TBN. :applause:
