So? There are a lot of families that do not have people serving in the military? Is serving in the military the ultimate gauge for values, patriotism and being qualified to be President?

That's ok, he calls a church with a woman pastor 'conservative'. I used to think I was moderately conservative. But if a woman pastor is conservative, then I am Supralapsarian - double, double-hyper, extreme conservative.

    Something like that.

(Barbarian notes that the Bush clan is noticably reluctant to defend their country)

Depends on how much you love America, I suppose. Every generation of my family has served since we got here.

Being willing to die defending our nation used to be expected of those wanting to lead. Values change, I suppose.

So the only way to judge if someone loves America is if they are willing to serve in the military?

:applause: thats wonderful. Does that mean those members of your family loved America more than the others?

Where is that written down? Again that is the ultimate gauge of things? So you cannot be a good leader unless you are willing to serve in the military?

Do I think those who volunteer to put themselves in danger to defend America are more patriotic than those who avoid it? Yes, I do.

Until recently, women weren't encouraged to join. Can't thing of a male who didn't until one uncle got a religious objection. Several of my aunts served in WWII, and my Mom worked for an Army weapons testing facility.

Just a cultural value. That seems to be gone, now. The leadership of this country is largely made up of those who refused to serve themselves, but expect others to defend them.

I come from a time and place where people would ask "has your son done his service yet?"

Those days are gone, at least for some parts of our society.

Hmmm, I think Christians not only have the right but responsibility to question any leader that says he is a Christian yet attends (along with his dad) a yearly "retreat" where they worship an owl and have homosexual prostitutes um, serving the guests. But that's just me.

Care to prove that from some source other than a wacky website?

The Clinton bashers, especially the Christian ones, should also.

Well good for him, but I dont see why it is news worthy.
My son joined the Marines too but it didnt make the news. Of course they sent him home again, said he had asthma, but he never had had it before.
As for the Bush girls, I personally don't like women in the military.
Don't forget folks, the guys and gals in the military need those of us who aren't as much as each other.

Kind of a contrast between McCain's kid, and the Bush offspring isn't it?

They've been active in entirely different ways...(Bush clan kids arrests for sexual misconduct, alcohol offenses, drug offenses, ect.)

In previous administrations, presidential offspring volunteered and served.

    You misspelled "disgusted."

I am grateful for Sen McCain's son willingness to serve and for all the others sons and daughters serving.

Now it is funny how a thread started about Sen McCain's son turned into a bashing of our president. This kind of garbage could go in any direction if people want to be consistant. I don't see Kerry's daughters serving--so what. You want to talk about character of offspring of President Bush? Have you ever heard the name Kennedy? These kind of attacks are worthless and those who attack our president and believe they stand on solid ground are really sinking in the muck and mire of their own partisanship.

Does everyone need to serve to prove their patriotism---No. And this is from one who proudly served.

    In response to the OP...

Why is this news exactly? Many people's sons sign up every day, in all service branches. McCain... Bush... I pray for them all, as well as every son and daughter fighting in our country's name. May God bless them all.

As for the opinions being constantly thrust around concerning our president and others in service, it is of course, your right to have said opinions, but my right as well to not listen.

As I said, some don't care. Their right, not to care.

Having served, I take a different view. McCain, BTW, was the son of an admiral, and could have dodged hazardous duty as Bush did. He chose to go in harm's way.

    He is a patriot.

If you were a former major presidential candidate and being discussed as being possibly elected president in 2008, then your son's enlistment would have made the news.
