...are the stories of corruption, payoffs, and sexual escapades on behalf of those elected to represent us [from the local on up to the federal governments], as well as their employees [the GSA] and those who are sworn to provide security and protect these leaders; merely signs of our society slow but eventual slide into oblivion?

Are we witnessing the social decay and financial ruin that the old Roman Empire, or even modern-day Russia incurred?

Maybe. Still, are the corruption, payoffs and sexual escapades of an order of magnitude different that during the Gilded Age, or many others, for that matter.

These examples are the tip of the iceberg. We are a rotten culture...rotten to the core. Its not going to get any better anytime soon I fear. It is beyond clear that politics is pointless. Nothing, save Christ Himself, will change how that system works. That's why no reasonable Christian should want anything to do with it.

However, we're not nearly as bad as the Romans. They were really bad. The Russians? Well they were communist and we're not that at all.

I beg to disagree. This country was founded as a Republic, not a democracy. We became a democracy and are well on our way to socialism with isn't far removed from communism. While we still wear the veil of a democracy, when you look underneath, socialism is well established. The foundation has been put in place to rip off the veil at the appropriate time (never let a good crisis go to waste) to reveal just how close to communisum we actually have become.

States rights are a thing of the past. The government bought them and sealed them when senators were put into office via direct vote rather than selection by state legislatures. Congressional powers are being stripped away by czars and departments of .... with abilities to enforce rules never enacted by Congress. A "war" is being waged against the Supreme Court in the eyes of John Q Public. If Obamacare is declared to be unconstitional, the Court will have taken away benefits from the people that were put into place by people they elected. If the opportunity arises to stack the Court to the far left, the Court will self-destruct and become just as ineffective as the Congress.

If I understand correctly about half of the US population is feeding at the government trough now. In order to do that, they have to comply with the Fed. How many more have to line up at the trough before the majority percentage is high enough to force the rest into compliance, too?

We need to get back to being a Republic not a democracy. There in lies the whole problem, the attitude that we live in a Democracy is destroying the concept of the republic and a Republican form of Government. That is destroying our nation that and the sin of the people. If we change the people we change the nation. We need a Great Awakening in this nation, people to awake to God and it starts when pastors stop tickling ears and instead step on the toes of the people. Stop trying to not hurt feelings and preach the truth in love. Problem is we don't have many pastors who know what truth is because the cemetaries I mean seminaries have stopped teaching the truth and became cemetaries. We need strong pastors who are grounded in the word and able to preach and teach that word to bring revival to our nation, morality will never be legislated it has to be taught and tjhat teaching from pastors and people of God.

What happens now may not be any different than a couple of centuries ago. The difference is now it's openly discussed and the information age brings these things to light.

Most of the above are just different aspects of a smoke screen. The real danger to America is the abuse and loss of our freedom under the Bill of Rights. It has been slow and incremental but every year we lose more and more of our rights.

30 Years ago it would have been illegal for a law enforcement officer to demand to search your person or vehicle without probable cause or the issuance of a warrant. Now it happens every day at Border Patrol Check Points, TSA searches, etc.

20 years ago it was unthinkable that a US citizen could be held incommunicado and without charges being filed. As of December 31, 2011 NDAA made exactly that legal.

10 Years ago it was unthinkable for any government agency to take private property from its lawful owner under the guise of eminent domain and give it to a non-governmental private corporation. Yet on January 4th 2005 the Supreme Court upheld just such a legal theft of private property.

5 Years ago it would be impossible to lay aside the 1st Amendment and deny the right of free speech to Americans. But today it is common to see Free Speech Exclusion zones where our 1st amendment rights are restricted.

2 years ago the videos we saw of police assaulting peaceful protesters would have resulted in the arrest and incarceration of the guilty parties. Today they do it every day and still wear the badge and receive a paycheck paid for by the very people they are abusing.

Just a little bit at a time, but one day we will wake up and realize it is too late. Our freedom is gone and we will find ourselves under an absolute dictatorship of the elites in Washington.

This is not the America I grew up in.

    Isnt THAT the truth.

My growing up years were about 1962 to 1974 (1st grade-to High school grad)

We were not rich, but we lived comfortably.

I can pretty much say that my growing up years were, for the most part, quite similar to Beaver Cleaver, My 3 Sons, the Wonder Years kid, and Opey Taylor.

    In other words..Mayberry.

We have come a LOOOONG way, in the wrong direction, since then.
