WIMBLEDON, England (AP) - Tennis has a new superstar. And she's just 17.

Completing an improbable journey from the far reaches of Siberia to the pinnacle of the sport, Maria Sharapova beat two-time defending champion Serena Williams 6-1, 6-4 Saturday to win Wimbledon for her first Grand Slam title.

She's the first Russian to win a Wimbledon singles title, the third-youngest women's champion in history and, at No. 13, the lowest seeded women's winner since Wimbledon began seeding players in 1927.

Glad to see anyone win except the whiney sisters. Those two need to grow up and act like class acts imho.

I usually root for the underdog (hey, I'm a Tiger Wood fan and HE'S been an underdog this year!)

And unlike Anna Kornikova(sp), this model to be (at least that what some people are calling her) can actually win a tennis tournament. All Anna could do was to look pretty and loose :D

    God Bless!!!

Talking about underdogs - how about those Mets - swept Barnabas Halo's precious Yankees.

PS - never once mentioned it to my mother - who must be in mourning over the whole situation!

Another PS - it was nice to see someone else win a tennis tournament!
