I would like to know what to think about this subject. I have a good friend who is attending a church and her faith is very strong, but she witnessed a person being "slain in the spirit" and I need to know how to explain to her this is not of God. Please help.

Here are three fascinating, and very different articles, about this -- all of which consider it a false doctrine. I just spent a little time looking at each. I was fascinated by the different approaches. Try to take the time for all three if you can.

Thanks Helen, I will read these and see what God will use for me and my friend. I talked with another friend today at lunch and she said that she believed in "slain in the spirit", but said that the Holy Spirit is a calm spirit and would not cause any confusion amoung people, seems to me that acts like this that are displayed in the church are acts of show. My friend said that the Holy Spirit can be so powerful that it can cause someone to be knocked out but usually it was in your prayer closet and that God was giving you Holy rest.

I guess that's one excuse for falling asleep during prayer. ;)

I've never had any experience with charismatic things like this, but being slain in the Spirit doesn't appear anywhere in the New Testament unless you count John falling as though dead at the feet of the Living One in Revelation, and I doubt anyone alive has had a spiritual experience to equal that.

Where does "holy laughter" come into play with being slain? What are the supposed biblical implications for... [IMG] [IMG] [IMG] [IMG] [IMG] [IMG] [IMG] [IMG]

One thing I heard a preacher say on this subject was that the Holy Spirit, when present in the Bible, never shook people.....He only shook buildings. The Holy Spirit doesn't come in to your body, take over, and make you do odd things like shake, laugh uncontrollably, or lay down in a dead faint. None of those things were ever described in the Bible as being caused by the Holy Spirt.
On the other hand, it does sound something like how demon-possessed people acted, doesn't it?

    Jesus said:
Why do they seek signs? Because they are blind to the things of the Spirit and blind people move around by feeling/sensing/seeking signs. Satan is more than happy to provide "directions" in the darkness, And no wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light. (2Co 11:14 ESV)

A friend mentioned something Peter said, The end of all things is at hand; therefore be self-controlled and sober-minded for the sake of your prayers." (1Pe 4:7 ESV) How can this apply to the slain in the spirit? are they in control of their self? Are they sober-minded? How can they be sober-minded or in control of their self when they are blacked-out?

I really believe that they completely misunderstand (or ignore) the ministry of the Spirit. It is not to draw attention to Himself, but to Christ; "But when the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father, he will bear witness about me." (Joh 15:26 ESV) The Spirit's ministry is to draw sinners to Christ, not to have them barking, laughing, dancing, babbling, and blacking out. For God is not a God of confusion but of peace. As in all the churches of the saints, (1Co 14:33 ESV)

    Love in the Lamb,

    dale

    Good comments here!

Remember, one of the fruits of the HS is self-control!

The only times in the NT I can think of where people fall are the Roman soldiers (and they fall forward) and John. This has nothing to do with the way slain in the spirit is being taught and practiced. Benny Hinn does it just by waving his hand over the crowd and people fall. This is probably partly due to the power of suggestion.

More links on slain in the spirit:

The Holy Laughter came from Rodney Howard Brown who brought it to Toronto where they got into the barking, roaring, etc. later on.

marcia, I've read the Benny Hinn uses a type of hypnotism(sp? sorry) and hypnotizes those people, I don't recall I think it is the whole audience, and makes easy to make suggestiosn too, so they've seen people fall over before,a nd when they get up there they already know what they are supose to do.
Also once years ago I saw him get caught paying people to fall, and be healed. Saw him admit to it.

My half of a slightly warmed discussion on the topic on BB a couple of years ago.

(Disclaimer: I repeated myself a bit on that page, it was originally 5 or 6 BB posts and I never got around to editing.)
