Avoiding the subjects of eschatology and the perpetuity of the Mosaic Law (2 hot-button issues of this forum)--What would you say is one of the most popularly misunderstood passages of Scripture?

I keep my own list, but I'm open for your suggestions.

Definitely the "husband of one wife" verses of I Timothy 3 and Titus 1:5-9.

Also, the "wives, submit yourselves to your own husbands" verse of Ephesians 5:22.

Most certainly Acts 2:38. More people will go to hell over that one verse than any other verse.

Probably right. I've often said, if I catch you breaking into my house, You'll be met with an Axe, and two 38's. :D

    Here's a couple;

Psalm 118:24 "This is the day which the LORD has made, we will rejoice and be glad in it."

Popularly assumed to be talking about any day, maybe today. Actually talking about the greatest day--when Christ gained our salvation by His victory.

1 Cor. 2:9 speaking of what God prepared for them that love him.

Popularly misunderstood as heaven. Properly understood as spiritual wisdom given us from God.

"The Truth shall set you free."

That is the THEN half of an if/then statement!

If you hold to my teaching, your are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.
    John 8:31-32

There are quite a few people for whom the truth is enslaving, not freeing, for the precise reason that they do NOT hold to the teachings of Christ and are therefore lost in the lie. For them, the truth is an enslaving enemy.

    Eph.,

This sounds like a Calvinist vs. Arminian thing, right?

Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, The Lord is one!
    Deut. 6:4
Loved by cultist to deny the essential doctrine of the Trinity.

Do I dare bring up Psalm 12 as it is misapplied to preservation of a particular (unnamed) Bible translation??

It's assuredly themost misunderstood passage over the Versions Forum! [IMG]

Real answer (not to engender strife like the previous)

II Peter 3:9 "The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance."

Everyone fails to see the "us" (as in believers) as the subject of each clause.

    Longsuffering "to us"
Not willing that any "of us" should perish
All "of us" should come to repentance

Matthew 16:18 And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.
