More proof that he/she/it is a moron.

Yes, because American sports, where grown men regularly rub and fondle each others rear ends, is so much more manly...

Soccer, the sport for people who hate sports.

Ann is right about this one. I see a lot of folks here not quoting her, and when ITL did, she didn't say what he said she did. She may not have been nice about it.

I, myself, don't care too much for football and basketball. But I love baseball and hockey, and played both as a youth, playing hockey until I was 32, and still play beer-league softball at a pretty high level. (We've beaten teams that Pepsi, and Seagram's put on the road.) All far more exciting and glorious than soccer could ever hope to be.

O/T….has anyone watched ESPN's 30 by 30 show on the two Escobars ?

In moderation its okay, but any sport can be an idol. SEC football is essentially a religion of its own. Kids playing t-ball/baseball on Sundays is silly to me, but parents think they have to drop everything important to make sure Junior knows the world revolves around him.

Just a question, but how do you find all this time to build houses, counsel people, get an advanced education, post 7,000 times on BB in one-year, and still be able to sit through a boring soccer match. If you ever write a time management book please send me a copy. 24 hours in a day is not enough for me.

"And perhaps, that if you don't like soccer, don't watch it? "

I told the wife couple days ago the media was trying to make us like sockher. That is all that is on the news, you watch it or not. Our media can't be balanced. If it rains a drop over normal we have wall to wall rain, if it is snow we have wall to wall snow, if ice ... First sunny hot day - you betcha, wall to wall HEAT!

The games are on ESPN. So, for another three weeks, don't watch ESPN.

As for the local sportscasts, are you telling me that the media shouldn't cover the biggest sporting event in the world? When the US is in the knockout round? With a chance to get to the semifinals?

    Really?

I really must remember to start similar threads complaining about football (American), basketball, etc. when their seasons begin.

They do not get it. It is cultural.

In my case, I grew up with it. It was what boys played in countries across Europe.

I picked it up in the military. Learned to play in Germany. Naturally, being American, the thought I'd better play in goal.

Thoroughly enjoy the game, the strategy, the geometric concepts. I coached on a "volunteer" basis at the high school level. They paid us, but it figured out to about 35 cents an hour.

I coached the goalkeepers for all four teams -- freshmen, sophs, JV and Varsity -- and coached the JV. We won two state titles while I was on the staff, and to this day I'm the only JV coach at that school that won his own invitational tournament. That was back when there were hardly any teachers at all who had soccer knowledge.

In fact, our "head coach" was the girls' softball coach. He never bothered us, told us to do what we did and let him carry our water, getting equipment, supplies, buses, etc. He was at every game, though. He became pretty knowledgeable.

Now the colleges and universities are turning out teachers/soccer coaches by the handful, just like football, basketball, wrestling, etc.

It's what boys play in every country other than the US and Canada. That's why most Americans hate it. It's foreign. If I had a dollar for every person I came across as a player and a coach that told me, "why do we play this stupid English game. We won the revolution for a reason," I would be on the Forbes richest list. American's hated cycling until Armstrong started winning, then everyone loved it. If America ever becomes a dominating force in international soccer the tide will change, I guarantee it.

Goal is not a fun position to play, though it could have been my lack of talent. Played forward position in a youth league until the skipper moved me to center midfield...loved playing that spot. I was skinny and fast during those days.

Ball handling and shot accuracy was the one thing that was constantly drilled. Decades later, I can still place the ball within 2' at 11 meters (penalty shot distance). :D

    I miss it.

    That's why I put If... :tongue3:

However, just three years with a European coach and things have improved greatly. Whodathunk the US would be moving on from the same group that is sending Ghana and Portugal home? We might end up a moderately decent team one day.

The group the US was in was not called the group of death for no reason. To survive to the next round in that group says a lot.

This is a great example of why everything Ann Coulter says should be ignored. She's one of the leaders of a movement on dumbing down America.
