Some U.S. Lawmakers Uneasy Over Gaza Plan

TEL AVIV – Rep. Dan Burton, an Indiana Republican regarded as one of the most security-minded members of the House, has expressed his concern over the effect of the Gaza pullout on U.S. interests in the Middle East and the war on terrorism.

Burton, a senior member of the House International Relations Committee, is one of several lawmakers who view the Israeli withdrawal as a victory for terrorism both over the Jewish state and the United States.

"Personally, I will not second guess the prime minister`s wisdom," Burton said in a recent House speech. "I very much hope that he is right. But again, my experience tells me that if you take steps to appease an enemy you only give him a green light to put more pressure on you. In my opinion, it is imperative and critical to U.S. national security that we as policymakers understand the consequences should the Israeli disengagement plan fail to live up to expectations."

Burton added that he has "watched the often turbulent goings on in the Middle East for a few years to say the least, and my experience tells me that our optimism should be tempered by the lessons of the past. In fact, I believe we should take a very cautious view of the current round of Israeli-Palestinian peacemaking, particularly with regard to Israel`s withdrawal from Gaza and parts of the West Bank."

Perhaps he will act on that feeling, or not.
Giving any of her land is a huge mistake!!!!! Even if you only look at it from a military perspective, that alone should be enough to wake some people up.

Certainly the Israelis must proceed with caution on this. To do otherwise would be unwise. It would also be unwise to continue to sit back and allow this decades old situation to continue to fester.

Asked why President Bush was pushing for it, Ettinger replied, "When I visited Washington recently, I was told that President Bush was and is against this disengagement but it ws Sharon who pressured him. The tradition in Washington is that the administration does not second guess an Israeli prime minister. There was therefore no real deliberations on how this plan would affect U.S. interests in the region."

But here's what I don't get - is Rep. Burton in the dark? Doesn't he know the original plan came from President Bush, Russia, UN, and EU? Doesn't he know how Sharon was threatened to go along with this or US would withdraw our foreign aid from Israel?

How is this possible? Doesn't the right hand know what the left hand is doing in Washington, DC?

Apparently not.

If this is done without reciprocity, I think it would certainly be repeating the mistakes of Oslo. However, I have noticed that whenever there is a terrorist attack, the pullout plan is put on hold and I think Sharon even stated recently that he would also respond by occupying more Palestinian territories, or something like that. The message is clear, if you want land and a state, you must first prove that you can do so peacefully.

I cannot imagine Bush supporting the pullout at all. Bush spends his time praying that Sharon doesn't flatten the whole place.

Sharon, given a free hand would kick all Arabs out of Israel and further expand Israel's borders. Pressure from NWO minions inside and outside Israel are forcing him to withdraw from the west bank and Gaza for the purpose of establishing a Palestinian state and the false peace prophesied in the Bible.

All told, 92 infiltration attempts into Israel from Gaza have been thwarted by security forces since the beginning of 2005. Friday night's effort was the first successful penetration from inside Gaza in seven months.

In this context, Rice's admiration for the "steps" Abbas has taken to curb Palestinian terrorism rings hollow. And yet Rice went on to compound her stance with an even more incongruous avowal: "When the Israelis withdraw from Gaza, it cannot be sealed or isolated, with the Palestinian people holed in ... We are committed to the connectivity of Gaza and the West Bank."

This sort of statement is grating for two reasons. First, because it implies that Israel is, presumably out of spite or indifference, arbitrarily impeding Palestinian movements when all such movements have immediate security implications. Second, because at just the moment when Israel is simultaneously under terrorist attack and tearing itself apart over dismantling settlements, Washington still seems to feel a need to search for some Palestinian demand it can endorse while publicly berating Israel.

This is called "evenhandedness," something that Rice's predecessor early in the Bush administration vowed would not continue under President George W. Bush, and yet remains a recurring touchstone of American policy.
