thank you Craig. I am genuinely humbled by your post. It is my great priviledge to be used of God in anyway, I just wish I could always be faithful.

Could I ask all of you brothers and sisters to pray for my father. On Tuesday he suffered a massive stroke. We don't know what is going to come of this, but pray that my family including my mother, put our complete trust in the Lord.

I did not put this here to hyjack the thread, so please do not change the subject, just please pray.

I don't believe tithing is a mandate, but my baseline for giving to my church is a minimum 10%. I don't teach or require others to do the same percentage, but I do believe that we should give regularly and proportionately from our earnings as the Lord provides. We must all prayerfully consider the amount the Lord requires from us.

Giving "cheerfully" does not mean to give what's left over. It also does not mean that I withhold my giving just because I'm not feeling "cheerful" at the time.

"Grace giving" as taught in the NT might require of you to give way beyond 10%. Watch out!

as a southern baptist I admit that it is true, there is nothing in the New Testament about tithe. Jesus just tells us to give cheerfully, give often, give all that you have available! I think the real debate should be do you give enough??? Sadly most Christians are abundantly blessed by God but give little time, talent or treasure in return :(

Yes, we will certainly pray for your father.
I also say thanks for your warm spirit.
They say that cream rises to the top. Well, so far this forum has been full of cream.
N.T. giving is to be sacrificial which I call "giving 'til it hurts." Some hurt at a lot less than 10% and others don't hurt until much past it.
However, it bothers me to go into a SBC and see the tract rack with 4-5 tracts on tithing and one (or none) on salvation. I admire the fast growing evangellistic churches that have a box at the door and do not even take up offerings during the service.
It seems to me that God can and does bless churches who are active evangelically, but donot teach tithing. Why cannot the SBC learn this lesson from 2 Corinthians 3:10-18?

Thank you all for your prayers. He had a better day today. He still cannot swallow, talk or move his left arm & hand. They will be placing a feeding tube in his stomach tomorrow. God is so good, He continues to give us everything we need.

    Russ,

While you have had several bad experiences with some SBC churches, you cannot judge them all on that basis.

The SBC does teach giving to the church and finacial support of the pastor, but 'tithing' is not the term used. 'Tithing' belongs in the OT. 'Giving' is of the NT. Using a guideline of 10% is just that, a guideline.

I am sorry that you have had a rough time on this issue with some SBC churches, Russ. Just try not to paint all of us SBC with the same brush, OK?

    In Christ,
    Trotter

I love you, brother. I consider myself a Southern Baptist, but have not found any in my area (several hundred) who are willing to let me use my God-given talents because of my stance.

The leadership in Nashville will probably treat you the same way if you tried to open a dialogue with any of them on this subject.

LIke the title of my book says, it is a TABOO doctrine. What a crying shame!!!
