    Messengers vote for "GCB":

    http://www.bpnews.net/BPnews.asp?ID=38089

Southern Baptists uncomfortable with the Convention's name/reputation may now go incognito using the alternate "descriptor" Great Commission Baptists (GCB).

Ooooh, we best watch out with that descriptor. God might smite us all down for the hypocrisy of it.

One messenger actually stood and said pretty much what you have said...I see this as a middle-ground position that hurts more than it helps...For example, if My church adopts the GBC "moniker" and someone asks what groups we are affiliated with, is it even honest to NOT say SBC?

    Sounds silly to me.

    1. There is always BBB, Bible Believing Baptists. But that would not be true.

    2. How about Freewill Baptists to comport with that report issued by the "freewillers" and the Arminian error routinely preached in the convention. Oops, that name is already taken.

    3. Then there could be something that might catch the eye like (Baptists). This would accommodate all those Southern Baptists misled by Scofield. Perhaps that should be () Baptists rather than (Baptists) or just spell it out: Parenthesis Baptists? Initials would get you there, PB is for Primitive Baptists. Of course in dire straits there could be something like Second Place Baptists to reflect the views of some dispensationalists that Christians take second place behind the Jews in the eyes of God. SPB, does that have good ring to it?

    4. How about Grace Baptists. No, Nooo! that would be false also. Too many "freewillers" on board.

Perhaps someone else has some ideas; but I tell you GCB for Great Commission Baptists just doesn't have that catchy sound to it like Suthern Baptists!

Seems silly to me too. I know a few pastors who have wives that are very vocal against the SBC label. Seems to me there are more important issues facing the Church today.

How about"we act/sound/talk JUST like a Denomination, but use labels to explain why we aren't one?"

The descriptor seems contrived to me. I would have preferred North American Baptist Convention if we're going to change it.

It's a rather unfortunate coincidence that a recently failed TV series which used the same name "GCB" was built on a premise that is a little too close to home. The GCB label will provide fodder for the late night talk-show hosts.

There you have it. Some who go about calling “their” doctrines, “THE” Doctrines of Grace, who would exclude those who would preach ALL men have the volition (free will) to actually respond to that grace to preach a doctrine of grace. They have monopolized on the term “Doctrine of Grace” in a ploy to escape to negative connotations associated with the term Calvinism while avoiding being more forthright and descriptive in their title such as calling their doctrine THE Doctrine of Pre-Deterministic Grace or someth9ng along that line. Such an attitude that “Grace” is not preached by those who hold to creaturely volition (free will), as we see above (#4), who actually preach a broader view of “grace” in that is genuinely offered to ALL, sets the stage for conflict.

It appears now those who have been placed in a position to defend the doctrines of grace which include creaturely volition try to lay claim to THE Great Commission Baptist to exclude those that preach deterministic grace type of Great Commission. I don’t like the ambiguous comeback/payback. Two wrongs don’t make a right.

I strongly do believe our differences should be brought to light for all in the SBC to see. The Articles of Affirmation and Denial was a stepping stone in that direction and the matter is far from over. The search for a title to spell out these differences is not a surprise. If the SBC is to stay together as one unit it seems only practical that sub-units exist to bring transparency to the differences of what is being taught from within it. That said, I see the problem and certainly don’t blame those who do want these differences to be recognized to be looking for that next stepping stone.

The easier more direct way would be for both sides to choose titles which openly reveal the differences and then use the post-nominal SBC after. That is “if” it is the desire of both opposing sides to continue claiming the SBC title.

I am an advocate of transparency of the different beliefs inside the SBC. How about you?

Why do you think denominations exist? Does the fact that local churches exist mean the "unity of the Body (the Church) is broken"? Is that what you are suggesting?!? Or is that what you are asking me if I am an advocate of?!? Your question is...well...thoughtlessly insulting to say the least. :(

So you are asking for all positions to be formally listed and addressed. and then left the SBC members decide to stay or go?

This fake name change is just plain goofy and it will lead to tons of confusion.
