What are the laws on SPAM email? Is it legal for them to send email with no way for a user to unsubscribe to their mailing list?

That last part--no way to unsubscribe--is the only thing I know of that makes it illegal.

Please! Allow me to warn you! I unsubscribed
to a perfectly innocent email I had ordered, later
deciding I did not need it. Immediately after I
unsubscribed, I started receiving all kinds of
spam. I tried to stop that by unsubscribing, and
immediately, I started getting porn. That box has
so much porn in it now that I don't even use that
    name anymore.,

I learned later, to my chagrin, that when you
unsubscribe, their intenntion is to makke money
from you in some way, so they sell your name to
    the porn dealers.

Now, I have one email for friends and one for any
business I conduct. In fact, I have several email
addresses, so that should one start receiving
spam (as I dreamed last night that my favorite
email did!), I can drop it and never go back.

Let me tell you, I innocently opened the first porn
email and about gagged. If you went in my old
email box and read just the titles, you would be
amazed at the decadence and at what wicked-
ness evil imaginations can dream up.

Actually, I have about 10 email addresses, most I don't visit anymore though. Different ones for different purposes. But I'm getting spammed in one of my personal email addresses (hotmail) and I'm about to go nutso on this University (Pheonix) for sending me email.

I wonder how this would work: create a new
email box, then request that they change
addresses. Let them send all they want, then,
to that address, but you never have to look or
bother with it. I haven't tried that, but it seems
it could work; that way, they are less likely to
sell the address you wish to use to other spammers.

there is a law being presented to make spam illegal. the best way to protect yourself and your family is NEVER use your personal email when you sign up for anything online, get an anonymous email, say from hotmail.com. when you sign up for hotmail do not use your real name or list your personal email address as the alternate contact address.
For anyone that gets loads of porn, get a filter, set adult contents sender/junk mail in outlook.
I get about 1 piece of junk mail a month because I use a hotmail address for anything that requires it online.

By the way Adam, they cannot send you mail without giving you a way to opt out of it. if you are totally livid about it you can go to the site that sent it (other than porn sites) and report them to their webhosts. you can find the webhost by doing a search on WhoIs.
another note on hotmail. set the junk mail filter on high..then your eyes wont set on anything they shouldnt.
