Over here in the UK (where DO I find the flags?) the government has just passed a law that will make it illegal to smack a child if it leaves a mark. The police are admitting that it will be unenforceable.

Well I don't have kids yet but I will say this, I will never ever tell my child "This is going to hurt me more than it's going to hurt you." Uh excuuuse me you're not the one getting the business end of that belt/hand lol.

My mom was the one that always gave out the spankings. "I'm gonna whip yer tail." Another oldie, but goodie "I aroughta whip you." Oh and then just after she would say that sometimes she would give just a hint of a smile and I could get her to laugh just a little, then it was back to business. Musta been because when I got in trouble I'd sometimes get the nervous laughter and she'd see that and kinda lose it for a second.

My dad only spanked me once for lying to him and he was the one that gave me that "This is going to hurt me...blah blah" line. You know now that I think about it I'm such a daddy's girl I think he probably cried later when I was out of his sight and he had done that.

My two older girls have never been spanked. My youngest son was spanked on two occaisions. The reason my older girls were never spanked is because they never gave me a reason, so I've never had to spank them. However, all of my kids know full well that I will, if I am given the need to. To date, my kids are all top notch scholastically, spiritually, and emotionally.

While I (and, I think, most responsible parents) am loathe to do it, I think that your comment is correct.

Never got a spanking I didn't earn. Never gave one that wasn't merited. Mom was afraid that she's be accused of hating us so she spareth not the rod. Only thing is, we had this big willow out back. She'd send us out to get our own switch. Dried out willow branches are very brittle. Green ones are like a buggy whip. By the time I'd get in the house with an appropriate (green) switch I'd be crying harder than any spanking would do. Of course by breakfast time the next day, I earned another whippin'.

Spanking our kids was rare. Usually, I would start with, "When I was your age..." By the time I got to the willow tree part they were begging to get sent to their room, grounded, anything but "When I was your age...."
