I find that lots of Scriptural guidelines for behavior are violated continually in non-tongues-speaking churches - in just about all churches, in fact.

    For example:

Be completely humble and gentle; do everything without complaining or arguing; consider others better than yourself; be kind and compassionate; only say whatever is helpful for building others up according to their needs; be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to get angry

    And so on.

To make a big deal about tongues-speaking or not in view of all these other violations, which to me are more serious (because tongue-speaking is simply a way some Christians manifest their faith, as best I can tell) seems to me, to be rather missing the point of the Bible.

But...it's just my opinion and I could be wrong... [IMG]

Thank you, Promise. The reason I get so 'heated' over the subject of 'tongues' is because this "movement" has destroyed my son's life. I've never doubted our boy's salvation since he was 10, but 3yrs. ago he joined a 'oneness/apostolic' group & it has led to his devastation. "Tongues", Pentecostal/charismatic teachings are not even Scriptural & are leading more & more believers astray. I've seen clear evidence of this on this very Board.

I've got a friend who speaks in tongues. One day he said something in a tongue (I do not know what, I wasn't there) but he remembered what he said. He was talking with someone else, and he'd been speaking in Hebrew. I'm pretty sure Hebrew's a language. I'm pretty sure that my buddy's been speaking in real languages, not gibberish.

    God Bless

No offense but - if he didn't know Hebrew, how does he know he was speaking in Hebrew? Did the other person tell him?

And if he does know Hebrew then speaking it wasn't the miraculous activity that Scripture refers to as 'speaking in tongues' - which means you speak in a language you don't know.

I've read stories of people speaking a language they don't know but someone else present does, and then translates it. So the interpretation is not miraculous but the speaking was.

I'm sure the people who relate this stories are sincere and believe them. I just don't know...I wasn't there.

I went to a Word Faith church (not realizing at that time I was in a cult) and they wanted to know if anyone didn't speak in tongues but wanted to...(I grew up in the Pentacostal church who knew that it was associated with the Word Faith movement) any way I went forward and they said you know how a baby goes goo goo ga ga...well they wanted me to practice that...I knew something was wrong and that It was not of God...how lame...If God wants me to speak another language to witness to someone he will give it to me otherwise the speaking in tongues thing is out...no longer required for today....If you will notice that the only ones who actually practice this speaking in tongues is Pentacostals, Vineyard, Word of Faith and a few others in that movement...ever heard a Baptist speak in tongues?

AMEN granny! Glad to see there are a few people who will stand for the truth and refuse to compromise it!
I know i said I wasn't going to continue in this conversation, but I can't stand to see everyone against a few.
I will not say more on this issue, but know I still stand with what I posted earlier.
Promise, Granny, I just want to tell you how good it is to see a few people who stand up for what is right. Praise the Lord! Yes, Granny, I wish we had more of the old time preachers today.
EVEN SO, COME LORD JESUS!!! :D
    Abby ;)

A true Baptist is one who contends for the faith by remaining in the truth. It means that we hold to the historic beliefs and practices which have been with us since the time of Jesus. It means we are grounded in the Word & practice Baptist doctrine, which is KJBible doctrine.

A true back-slidden Baptist is all of the above, but who somehow got lazy in his daily walk with God(quit reading/studying his KJBible, careless church attendance, lax in his prayer life, putting other things ahead of the Lord, etc); therefore letting his guard down, allowing the enemy(satan) to come in and seduce him, thus destroying all that was once good in his life.

    Granny Gumbo,
With all due respect, Oneness doctrine is quite dangerous, I agree, and I am sorry your son is involved in this. They deny the Trinity, and they teach many other things that are not scriptural sound. This does not however negate the gifts of the Spirit. I am sorry you have such a strong reaction to this subject, but I can understand why you would. I will not debate the subject any further.

I also do not think all of the "Word of Faith" people are wrong in their teaching. I do have difficulty with the name it and claim it, and God wants everyone wealthy mentality. Again, this does not negate the gifts of the Spirit.

To those who do not believe it is for today. I have no problem with that. You are still saved regardless.

To those who speak in tongues and believe it is for today, I have no problem with that. You are still saved regardless.

May we not make this a divisive issue? God knows how to reveal His truth to all of His children. It is not the gifts of the Spirit that divide us; it is the Judgments we make about true believer's in Jesus. We should speak against true cults that deny the Deity of Jesus, but towards our brother's and sisters in Christ, may we lift them up in prayer if we think they are heading down the wrong path.
May we not shoot our own people? I think about what my friend said one time (about raising teens) "Remember to keep the big things big, and the small things small!” in other words, Choose your battles!
I would apply this towards us as well!

    God Bless :D
    Naomi

I can completely understand you, ma'am.
I have a younger sister who was real close to me, and she got so immersed in this "tongue" thing it broke up her own family.
Among the many doctrines her church held was that if she was not doing some kind of "ministry", then she was probably not saved, and she had two things she had to know she had as a manifestation of her salvation. One is that she had to have been anointed and that anointment is thru her ability to speak in tongues, and the second is her burning desire to serve the Lord.
She got her "anointing" and with that, she immersed herself in Bible studies here and there and everywhere with the end in view of finally being a "preacher" in her church.
She was so immersed in her "ministry" that she would leave their home at 6 am and return at 2 am in the morning of the next day.
Nobody tended to her brood, and the house was a mess, and all this while her husband was working his "behind" thin in Saudi Arabia as a construction worker in that Saudi heat. I was then of the Arminian side and when I spoke to him about "receiving" the Lord during one of his vacations his answer was a big no and his reasoning was that if the Lord he is to receive will demand that in serving Him he is to neglect his family like my sister does, then he would rather go to hell.
I have talked to my sister many times, and talked with her pastor to advise her but her pastor never did.
Her husband finally left her, converted to the Muslims, married somebody else from Saudi, altho he continues to support his children.

I think I understand what you are saying...

I hope that you also know it because it is evident to you and others that God is at work in you, producing good works that others see. After all He prepared these beforehand that we should walk in them (Eph 2) and faith without works is useless (James 2)

I don't know where you are going with this, but my bible tells me works do not save. Jesus saves. Back-slidden believers still go to heaven. Works do not keep you saved, works show your faith to the world.

    Grace, thru faith, saves.

I try to do good works, only because it is a command, to be not just hearers of the word, but doers. But the works have nothing to do with my salvation. It is a gift of God. None of us deserve it. He gives it to us anyway.

Wow, you're very defensive...I suppose I shouldn't be surprised in view of your last post about me.

But you don't need to assume the worst...I wasn't trying to trick you or anything...

    Indeed [IMG]

Well, except - may I add this? That I hope that your good works actually emanate from a heart full of gratitude; that it is a command you delight to obey, except that we do struggle against temptations not to obey, even as believers.
