For anyone who follows the Emergent movement, listen to this link from Doug Pagitt who is interviewing John S. Spong. Warning it is hard to stomach but many follow this garbage in the name of Christianity.

Spong sounds like some of the cracked pots on this forum who don't need a savior.

I had forgotten about Spong and his great egotism. On the radio show, he refers to Scripture but does not actually quote much, except to twist it. He says that there never was a time that people were perfect, meaning no Garden of Eden, and so all they need to do is to realize their own human potential. On the radio, Spong seems to say that the KJV should not have supplied the word he in this verse:
Spong says that the soldiers fall back in dismay, as if Roman soldiers knew Jewish theology. It seems that Spong is complaining about mistranslations in John in the KJV whereas they do not exist in truth because the KJV is clear where they have inserted words needed in English for understanding of the Greek intention. KJV is not totally a literal translation but has some dynamic aspects.

He says that we should understand Scripture in light of the Dead Sea Scrolls and that we live in a post-Darwin age, which I suppose he means that we are now even more scientific. Spong says that Jesus gave a good example of how we can all live up to our human potential and be even happier. Spong dislikes the butcher shop aspect of Christianity that teaches
Spong says that God would not call for human sacrifice. While the religious left claims great knowledge and scholarship, Spong cannot be considered a serious scholar because of his lack of accuracy and his personal opinions of what God should be.

Spong is no theologian. Creation.com has written a run-down of his opinions in more detail http://creation.com/whats-wrong-with-bishop-spong Spong does not believe that Jesus is God and his ramblings have been called "theo-babble."

Pagitt is just as dangerous for always having Spong on his radio show. It shows how heretical the Emergents can be. What I cannot believe is that Spong still loves to go to church when he openly admits he doesn't believe in the God of scripture.

Spong is a born & raised Southern Episcopal. He comes up to the East with his liberal humanistic nonsense & expects us to buy his crap

I recall old ladies being so insensed by him that they would hit him with their walking canes.

Well he continues to write & sell his heresies ...in retrospect, they should of hit him harder. He is pathetiic.

Emergent (with a T) guys and Spong are like peas in a pod. Unable to rest in the biblical understanding of how God's omnipotence, omniscience, and omnibenevolence co-exist, they've stripped him of either his omniscience or his omnipotence.

I'd never heard of Spong before, but it is abundantly clear that he is a heretic of the first order, and this Pagitt fellow is just as bad.

I think the Episcopal diocese he ran into the ground as bishop is in your neck of the woods, isn't it? Spong denies the virgin birth, deity of Christ, physical resurrection and anything else that requires the miraculous. For all intents and purposes Spong is an atheist. These what-you-see-is-all-there-is intellectuals are so limited in scope. Putting aside the authority of scripture for the sake of argument, the findings of quantum physics and string theory alone open the door for events we cannot explain in the natural realm.
Miracles do happen. We “see through a glass darkly,” but acknowledgement that we see through a glass darkly entails humility. There is the rub.
Of course, for those of us who do believe in the authority of scripture, the miraculous seems natural.

In the name of tolerance, the liberal denominations have embraced so much unbelief that atheism is a practical challenge.
