The following is a short description of stockholm syndrome.

Stockholm Syndrome describes the behavior of kidnap victims who, over time, become sympathetic to their captors. The name derives from a 1973 hostage incident in Stockholm, Sweden. At the end of six days of captivity in a bank, several kidnap victims actually resisted rescue attempts, and afterwards refused to testify against their captors.
While some people are suggesting the recent Elizabeth Smart kidnapping sounds like a case of Stockholm Syndrome, the most famous incident in the U.S. involved the kidnapped heiress Patty Hearst. Captured by a radical political group known as the Symbionese Liberation Army in 1974, Ms. Hearst eventually became an accomplice of the group, taking on an assumed name and assisting them in several bank robberies. After her re-capture, she denounced the group and her involvement.

What causes Stockholm Syndrome? Captives begin to identify with their captors initially as a defensive mechanism, out of fear of violence. Small acts of kindness by the captor are magnified, since finding perspective in a hostage situation is by definition impossible. Rescue attempts are also seen as a threat, since it's likely the captive would be injured during such attempts.

It's important to note that these symptoms occur under tremendous emotional and often physical duress. The behavior is considered a common survival strategy for victims of interpersonal abuse, and has been observed in battered spouses, abused children, prisoners of war, and concentration camp survivors.

Does anyone see any different ways that this type of brainwashing could be used?

    Peace,

    Tam

I'm sure some are wondering why I posted this thread on this board.

It is because the actions described are also used by cults, to get people to go along with their teachings. Remember Jonestown, or the group in Calif. that were waiting for some comet to pick them up?

These same tactics can be used to get people to come into churches.

Lets say a person meets another person, who is really interesting, and they invited to some group that they are in. Doesn't have to be a religious group, just nice friendly people.

Some of them are kind of pushy, but for the most part, they are nice. You begin to notice things you don't agree with, but they are so insistant that they are right, that you don't say anything, and pretty soon you are going along with whatever they want you to do, just so you can be accepted by this great group!!

Soon you have lost your focus on what you believe, what was important to you, and have gone to follow some false teacher.

We need to gaurd ourselves against such tactics.

This is how you get hooked on false doctrine. You listen to people you have talked to for months, and before you know it, they sound reasonable, and you buy into the lie, and then the devil has picked off another one.

    Thats why the bible says:

Matt 7-13 Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat:
14 Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.

There are people that believe that everyone who ever lived will be redeemed, and go to heaven, but that doesn't mean that they are right.

But it's a nice warm fuzzy, and includes everybody, so more people will embrace it.

You too can be drawn into error.

Just let your gaurd down, and buy into the lie.

These forums can be very informative, but they can also be very demeaning, spiritually speaking.

1 Tim 1-4 Neither give heed to fables and endless genealogies, which minister questions, rather than godly edifying which is in faith: so do.
5 Now the end of the commandment is charity out of a pure heart, and of a good conscience, and of faith unfeigned:
    6 From which some having swerved have turned aside unto vain jangling;
7 Desiring to be teachers of the law; understanding neither what they say, nor whereof they affirm.

We do on these boards exactly what the scriptures say not to do! We argue and fight and gnaw at each other. DEBATE means discuss, not argue with each other!

Another scripture: Titus 3-9 But avoid foolish questions, and genealogies, and contentions, and strivings about the law; for they are unprofitable and vain. It says to avoid the very thing that is done here.

My mother had a saying that seems to be true in some cases. She said: You can get used to living in a pigpen, if you do it long enough

If you listen to trash talk long enough, you begin to believe it. Add to that the fact that some people just want to be accepted and patted on the back, and told how wonderful they are.

Then if they meet some people that start doing that and then start feeding them false doctrine, pretty soon there is a new convert!!

Beware, lest YOU, become fodder for the wolves!!! One of the things that people use, to get other people to believe their particular brand of the gospel, is fear. They say if you don't believe their teachings, you are a heritic, and led by satan, etc.

We should read the WORD, pray for understanding from the Holy Ghost. Even if you go to a fantastic church, I'm sure your pastor won't mind if you take notes, and check out the sermon later.

Proverbs 4-23 Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.
24 Put away from thee a froward mouth, and perverse lips put far from thee.
25 Let thine eyes look right on, and let thine eyelids look straight before thee.
26 Ponder the path of thy feet, and let all thy ways be established.
27 Turn not to the right hand nor to the left: remove thy foot from evil.

Be careful who you believe, even on these Christian boards.

    Tam
