There is a difference in faultfinding and exhorting! I hope to be exhorting, especially to all who are held accountable for delivering God's word to the people in accuracy!
When one is nearer the exit the view becomes clearer, especially when one has an intense hunger to know only His truth!

Suggestions for all pastors to read and deeply ponder today, taking to heart their serious responsibilities to our holy God!
    Psalm 119:130
    Psalm 19: 7-11
    2 Timothy 4:1-5
    Titus chapters 2 & 3
    1 John 2: 3-6, 9-11
Obedience is external visible proof of salvation!

Titus 2:4....His own special people, zealous for good works!

Blessings for having a dedicated desire to do God's work, God's way!

Exactly! When the words of God are preached people will do good works on their own, because they love God and have a deep desire to minister to those in need! We are His ambassadors, His hands, feet and voice acting in His stead!

Excellent sermon brother! Very relevent and true. I love the use of powerpoint to reach a visually oriented society. You delivered a very biblical message that is so true of our church today! If we can't love people just as they are....... His love is not in us! I pray that God will continue to bless your ministry, and I think He will. He loves to hear His own word preached. Grace and peace.

2bHizown....... did you click each of the windows to see the next powerpoint? I'm not sure you did, as our brother used much scripture to get his message across. I was very impressed with his use of scripture and being true to context. I usually agree with most of what you post brother, but in this case I don't think you have seen all his sermon. Grace and peace

Yes, I too loved the scriptures! I guess its the beginning I have trouble with!
The people need to hears God's word, not about SuziQ(they each know plenty of similar tragic situations) or about the 'selfrighteous church' who apparently didnt do there duty as the other church would do!
If and when the Word of God is preached in its fullness the applications come through! I can see that Tim has a heart for the Lord, used plenty of scripture and such.
The same scriptures when exegetically delivered where people can see that God Himself is telling them who they must be in Christ, and IF in fact they arent in Christ they will be convicted and come to repentance. Then they will have a true zeal to work for God!
Personally, I also object to the use of Powerpoint! Dont people take their bibles to church anymore in your neighborhood? Dont they listen and underline and mark as you speak to highlight God's word to themself?

If this be true, we have a host of unsaved members in Baptist Churches.

Obedience is a commitment to the Lord, and not all believers are so commited. An illustration is a window to the word, and as Spurgeon once said, It sticks like a fishes hook to the mouth of the fish.

    Cheers,

That is a very sad truth that could be remedied only with the sound preaching of the Word!

I could preach soundly on the genealogies of the Old Testament. They would be sound biblical sermons, but accomplish very little when it comes to living the life.

Sometimes we need the cold facts of life to buffer the scriptural truth........open the window.

    Cheers,

    Jim

I agree with you about people not using their bibles enough. What I disagree with is your negative view of the use of powerpoint. I think God will use the electronic medium for His glory, just as He used the printing press. What if people brought their laptop with bible software that has many more tools available than their hardcopy? I know...... what if there is a power failure? But God is in control of that too huh?

Thanks 2bhizown... I understand what you are saying. I welcome constructive criticism...

I too am aware that the use of powerpoint can decrease the amount of using the printed word in church. So, that is why I take the time to turn to each scripture even though it is on the screen. I feel it is important for the congregation to see me using a printed paper copy of the Word of God, even though what is on the screen is as much the Bible as the printed word on paper.

I also ask them to turn to the passages while I am preaching.
And a lot of times I Include handouts in the bulletin for them to take notes on.

When I started using powerpoint guess who complimented the most on the use of it....

The older ones in the congregation, they thanked me for putting the scriptures on the screen because of their failing eyesight, it is hard for them to read the printed Word. It is easier for them to read it on the screen...

As for the illustration, although many already know someone like that, sometimes they need reminded. It was just the opening illustration and the closing illustration... The opening to get their attention, and the closing to drive home the practical application of the passage.

A sermon without a practical application is useless... It is just rehearsing Bible Trivia.

That is why I like, and teach practical, applicational Sunday School lessons and Bible studies. The Bible is practical for today.
And we need to know how to apply it in everyday situations.

Hopefully, that is what I try to accomplish when I preach and teach.

Why would anyone bring their bible if they knew the powerpoint was to be used. People are not familiar with their bibles today and often cant even find the books. This is the famine of the word spoken of in the OT! The word isnt being preached.

When the word is preached, obviously we're speaking of the scriptural teachings as mentioned earler in my post and of sound doctrines! That is quite ridiculous to speak of preaching on geneologies! It is sound doctrines they need to hear, to know full well that fornication and adultery are dread sins, as are other sins that they so rarely hear from God's word; hence they claim today there is nothing wrong with it! Pastors avoid certain scriptures they consider might bring conflict and/or hostility so how can our churches bring about purity in the church?

I'm sorry you have experienced some bad preachers in the past, but rest assured that I don't avoid the hard topics.

And our congregation do bring their Bibles and follow along... You can hear the pages turning all over the church. Just maybe if we preachers keep preaching on the importance of using the Word of God, just maybe they will listen and learn.

I praise God for the church I am in. They have good old fashioned standards while using modern technology to reach out to others.

To address this... The same reason they bring their Bibles when a preacher just reads the passage... I have been in churches where Christians don't open their Bible to read along, but depend on the reading of the Pastor.

They bring their Bibles because it is the right thing to do.

Now would you agree with me that Christians need to get out of our 4 walls and reach out to the community through the love of Christ?

Well, a christian never was in 4 walls to begin with! A christian is who he is in Christ 24 hours a day, wherever he is, doing God's work!

As for the bibles, if while he is preaching the preacher says frequently, 'Follow me to John 10' or wherever he is presently reading throughout the sermon the people will do so!

One thing that so impressed me the first time I visited my present church was that in front of me was a large section of young people and when the pastor began to preach they all had open bibles and marker in hand, ready to receive the words of God! What a shock that was! I loved it and began, after joining that church to notice they are mannerly, well behaved and well oriented to the scriptures! It truly begins in the home, where children are taught the importance of having a bible, knowing the books and following the sermon in their own bible! Certainly that is true for adults! They're not to be spoon fed but to search truths out and follow the sermon, being familiar and knowledgable with their bible, to grow in wisdom and understanding of the Lord!

That is truly wonderful Tim! God bless!
Our pastor said that is a most beautiful sound, hearing the pages of bibles being turned!

Forgive me if I sound prideful or critical as that is not what is in my heart! I'm so terribly grateful to God for bringing me there at this late stage that I so want everyone to know such truths and to hold our God in high reverence and awe!

And they all began with one accord to flip pages to the "proof texts". I have seen this also in so called biblically oriented services. Proof texting quoted as being "sound" biblical preaching,,,oh, and don't forget the shouting and pulpit pounding and dancing all over the platform.

    Cheers,

    Jim

Jim, are you mocking? What does this have to do with the discussion? Do you oppose the use of bibles in church? Your previous posts havent given me that impression, thankfully!

I find that the single biggest reason people do not open their Bibles is that the preacher does not give them time to find the passage . . .

And when ya' gotta preach an extra long sermon AND beat the church down the street to lunch, ya' gotta cut somewhere.

    ;)
